Thanksgiving: The dogs who sailed over on the Mayflower

With Thanksgiving just around the corner (next Thursday), this seems like an appropriate time for this information I just received from the American Kennel Club (AKC):

Research confirms that pilgrims weren’t the only passengers aboard the Mayflower.  Turns out man’s best friend also made the transatlantic voyage from Southampton, England to Plymouth, MA in 1620.

In other words, two dog breeds were apparently the first to make dogs a part of everyday life for the earliest Western settlers. I figure that’s worth a little celebration, don’t you?

Hey Dog Lovers: 3 new AKC dog breeds to debut at National Dog Show

Three new American Kennel Club-recognized breeds will make their national TV and major competition debuts at The National Dog Show Presented by Purina next month.

The Isish Red and White Setter, Norwegian Buhund and Pyrenean Shepherd will be among more than 150 dog breeds competing for Best in Breed, Group Winner and Best in Show honors at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks/Valley Forge. These breeds will be introduced to the American television audience during the Thanksgiving Day broadcast of the National Dog Show, a 2-hour, family entertainment special airing nationally on NBC immediately following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

For the 18th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in America, according to 2008 registration statistics released today by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
