This Saturday and Sunday, July 21-22, are the last days you can adopt an adult cat from ARF with NO adoption fees!
http://www.arf.net/animal-programs/adoption/cat-independence-2012.php

Hi Gary,
We are coming up on our last weekend of our Cat Independence Days event where all adult cats have no adoption fees. We would really appreciate a push to try and make the most of this event and clear out the shelter to enable us to save more lives. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a photo of one of our adoptable adult cats (above) and the press release follows. Thank you for your continued support.

Tony La Russa & Baxter … can you help?

Tony La Russa and Baxter. (ARF photo)

Gary:
Two weeks ago, I met the ARF rescue truck and help unload the dogs.  One stood out from the others, with his squatty little bulldog legs and chocolate brown fur.

Baxter was nearly 2 years old and had been housed in the county animal shelter since he was 6 months old as evidence in a criminal case. Alone, no toys and no grass for 18 months on a cold concrete floor, night after night.  Each time the rescue team inquired whether this amazingly good-natured little brown bull dog mix could join the others in the truck … and trip after trip, he had to stand there all alone and watch the others leave.

Finally Baxter was able to join the others in the ARF rescue truck.   He’s been up for adoption here now and we would love to have him find a “real” family who can show him what “fun” means.  Can you help get the word out?

Elena:
My pleasure! Hey, everybody! Baxter needs a loving home so he can learn what life is REALLY all about. Give them a call, or drop by ARF and meet Baxter in person so you can see what a great dog he is. You can find out more about ARF at http://www.arf.net

Thanks for caring! /Gary

ARF’s Emergency Medical Fund needs your support

ARF photo: Cat in distress

Gary:
Last week, a dog named Rocky was brought  to ARF’s clinic, suffering from extreme abdominal pain. After x-rays, it was determined there was an obstruction in the intestine and surgery was needed to help save Rocky’s life.  ARF’s medical team discovered huge amounts of string, which was most likely broken up particles from a towel, from the poor dog’s intestine and stomach. Nearly two feet of intestines had to be removed since the foreign body was so damaging, however, ARF’s skilled veterinarian was able to perform the life-saving surgery.

Rocky is now at home with his family and is healing well but what about other injured animals who’s owners can’t help with a broken leg, or respiratory illness?   Without the Emergency Medical Fund (EMF) and individual donations, Rocky may not have made it.

The EMF program has saved the lives of thousands of animals in need and is often the last hope for families struggling to get by, who experience an unexpected injury or health crisis in their pet.  It is not only traumatic emotionally, but financially – sometimes their only apparent choice is to euthanize or surrender the animal to an uncertain future.

EMF not only saves lives, but also prevents shelter overcrowding, keeping beloved pets at home with their loving families.  Our funds are dangerously low in this economy, at the time when the most demand is being placed on medical services.  Can your faithful readers help rescue a pet in need of medical attention and avoid their suffering?   No gift is too small to help (love it when the children get involved and host penny drives) and donations can be made at  http://www.arf.net

Help ARF’S Holiday Hope Fund & Foster FFF’s Lonely Pets For The Holidays

I’ve been alerted to some special needs for this Holiday season. If you can provide any kind of help to Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation and/or Friends of the Formerly Friendless (or any other local nonprofit animal rescue groups that need an assist), please do. Thanks for caring! Merry Christmas!! /Gary

Hi Gary:
AUGH!  I have tears in my eyes as I write this. We need your help!

ARF rescued a 13-week-old kitten in need of medical care and TLC from the Martinez shelter after having been abandoned the Concord BART station. A good Samaritan found her in a cardboard box. She has minor wounds however her ears have been badly damaged, possibly burned by a chemical agent or other unknown cause and will likely require surgical removal. They are stiff, we fear they will break! She can still hear and is remarkably affectionate, purrs like a diesel and engages anyone willing to pet her.

raider-nation-cats

The Oakland Raiders have helped Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation find homes for 37 adults cats through a special Raider Nation Cat Celebration promotion.

All adult ARF cats (six months and older) are available free of adoption fees, thanks to the generosity of the Oakland Raiders (standard adoption criteria still apply). This special Raider Nation Cat Celebration ends Sunday, October 25.

Losing your house? Don’t lose your pets!

On Dec. 22, Times staff writer John Simerman wrote a story about pets becoming a casualty of the foreclosure epidemic. People who have to move out sometimes don’t or can’t take their animals with them.

Real estate agents who specialize in foreclosed properties now sometimes find themselves also rescuing pets that have been left behind.

Tony La Russa, co-founder of Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), shocked after reading the above story, immediately made the following two Public Service Announcements (PSA) and sent them out to Bay Area radio and TV stations. If you know pet owners in the process of losing their home who could use a little help from their friends with their pets … please have them contact ARF for some assistance. Thanks.

30-SECOND PSA BY TONY LA RUSSA
Recently California had more than 39,000 foreclosure filings.
Increasingly, pet owners who lose their homes are abandoning their pets, often with tragic results.
If you face losing your home and pet, or would like to get involved helping others, please contact ARF at 925-256-1ARF (925-256-1273) or visit http://www.arf.net
If you lose your home, please don’t abandon your pets, please contact ARF.

20-SECOND PSA BY TONY LA RUSSA
Household foreclosures are at epidemic levels. Too often homeowners with a pet family member are facing the loss of their homes and pets.
Please don’t abandon your pets. If you need help or to be a part of the solution, contact ARF at 925-256-1ARF (925-256-1273) or http://www.arf.net

Thanks for caring. /gary
