Hey, I just received my annual news release on the top 10 dog and cat names of 2009, and guess what? “Bella” beats out “Max” for top dog name!

For six years in a row, Max ruled the top spot. But in an upset that is sure to have dog owners talking, Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), has declared Bella the most popular dog name of 2009. VPI crunched the numbers on its more than 475,000 insured pets to determine this year’s most common names, and Bella beat out Max by more than 400 dogs.

Fans of Max, however, can rest assured that for cats, that name is still top dog – er, top cat.

I Googled “Obama, Bo” at 7 a.m. this morning and received 13,500,000 hits. (Then I Googled “Obama, unemployed” and got 13,000,000 hits.)

Obama to bring new “Presidential Pooch” to White House for his daughters

President-elect Barack Obama had a special comment to his daughters when he gave his acceptance speech last night after being elected as the 44th President of the United States:

“Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the White House.”

Just about every U.S. president has had a First Dog in the White House, ever since George Washington had his 17 hounds and Martha Washington’s parrot. You can find out more about presidential pooches at http://www.presidentialpetmuseum.com/whitehousepets-1.htm

The big questions now are:

1. What kind of dog breed will the Obamas bring with them to the White House?

2. What will they name it?

3. Will they spay or neuter their new pet and do other good  and proper things to set a good example for the rest of the nation and its pets?

You can add your answers below. Have fun! /Gary

Move over “Fido,” the American Kennel Club (AKC) has announced that “Lady” and “Bear” top the list of most popular male and female dog names in the U.S. in 2007.

“Traditionally names based on a puppy’s physical appearance or personality, such as ‘Spot’ or ‘Sassy,’ have been popular with dog owners,” said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “Today we are seeing human names, such as ‘Jack’ and ‘Molly,’ and names that reflect a pet’s stature in the home, such as ‘King’ and ‘Princess,’ gain in popularity as more people consider their dog a valued member of the family.”

The top male/female dog names, according to the AKC are:
