The Humane Society of the United States Applauds Governor Brown’s Enactment of New Animal Protection Reforms

California cracks down on shark finning, animal fighting, and pet overpopulation

SACRAMENTO -– Championed by The Humane Society of the United States and other advocacy organizations, backed by Californians, and supported by overwhelmingly bi-partisan votes in the Legislature, the seven bills signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown this session add to California’s track record as a front-runner in initiating path-breaking animal protection legislation.

“The animals themselves may be voiceless, but Governor Brown’s signature speaks volumes,” said HSUS senior state director Jennifer Fearing. “These laws reflect Californians’ widespread support for strong, enforceable laws to protect animals.”

The governor has joined the legislature in enacting the following bills this year:

BAD RAP agrees Michael Vick is BAD NEWS for Oakland Raiders

Donna Reynolds, executive director of BAD RAP, the non-profit pit bull rescue organization that is trying to find homes for many of the dogs than Michael Vick abused in his dog fighting operation, dropped me a note commenting on my Nov. 3 blog, “Not sure making dog fighter and ex-Falcon Michael Vick a Raider is a good idea.”

Not sure making dog fighter & ex-Falcon Michael Vick a Raider is a good idea

There was a column on the Sunday sports pages in Bay Area News Group newspapers headlined, “Vick could be a dynamic fit in the Raiders’ offense,” and a sports story just below the column, “Could ex-Falcon Vick join Raiders out of prison?”

Both thought Vick would fit right in and be a “dynamic” addition to the Oakland Raiders pro football team.

Dogfighting reward

Humane Society of the United States launches dogfighting reward program.
As part of an aggressive campaign to stamp out dogfighting in America, The HSUS is offering $5,000 to those who provide information leading to the arrest and prosecution of any person involved in illegal animal fighting.

It’s about time somebody did something like this.

You can learn how to claim the $5,000 reward by going to

Public service announcements in varying lengths of 15, 30 and 60 seconds are available at Check these PSAs out. You’ll find them interesting and educational.

Narrated by Wayne Pacelle, president & CEO of The HSUS, the public service announcements provide listeners with general information about the dogfighting problem. You can help by sending copies of these PSA’s to your local radio and TV stations.

Ann Chynoweth, director of The HSUS’s Animal Fighting and Cruelty Campaign said, “Michael Vick’s guilty plea to federal dogfighting charges highlighted the reality of this barbaric practice. We are pleased to announce the $5,000 rewards in our effort to end animal fighting in America.”

Dogfighting is a highly-organized underground movement, often involving other crimes such as drug and weapons trafficking, prostitution, and money laundering. More than 250,000 dogs are placed in dogfighting pits each year.

The HSUS estimates that 40,000 people are involved in organized dogfighting and an additional 100,000 are street-level fighters. A three-year study released by the Chicago Police Department showed that 65% of the people arrested for animal abuse crimes — including dogfighting — were also arrested for violent crimes against people.

You can find out more about The HSUS and its many animal programs at

Check it out. /Gary

I’m doing research on local dogfighting for some columns I’m writing.
If you are familiar with any dogfighting that’s taking place in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’d appreciate you passing along details about who’s doing it, what the situation is, when it’s happening and where it’s happening.

You can e-mail me at or leave the info by scrolling down to “Post a comment” below … or by clicking on “Comments” at the end of this entry.

I’ll keep your name confidential. You have my word as a reporter. This is just between you and me.

Any dogfighters out there who will let me interview them? No names. No photos. Just information from the people who really know about dogfighting, to help me educate my readers about it. Thanks. /Gary
