The Humane Society Legislative Fund Releases California State Humane Scorecard

Scorecard evaluates elected officials on work for animals for the 2011 state legislative session

SACRAMENTO — The Humane Society Legislative Fund is releasing its California State Humane Scorecard ( for the 2011 state legislative session. The scorecard provides a snapshot of California state lawmakers’ records on animal welfare policies. Lawmakers are scored based on their floor votes on bills addressing such issues as animal fighting, microchipping shelter dogs, the road-side sales of animals, vaccinations, shark finning, spaying and neutering, animal cruelty and licensing.

The Humane Society of the United States Applauds Governor Brown’s Enactment of New Animal Protection Reforms

California cracks down on shark finning, animal fighting, and pet overpopulation

SACRAMENTO -– Championed by The Humane Society of the United States and other advocacy organizations, backed by Californians, and supported by overwhelmingly bi-partisan votes in the Legislature, the seven bills signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown this session add to California’s track record as a front-runner in initiating path-breaking animal protection legislation.

“The animals themselves may be voiceless, but Governor Brown’s signature speaks volumes,” said HSUS senior state director Jennifer Fearing. “These laws reflect Californians’ widespread support for strong, enforceable laws to protect animals.”

The governor has joined the legislature in enacting the following bills this year:

FEDS & agribiz can’t spend federal funds on anti-Prop 2 ads

Millions of misappropriated federal dollars temporarily put on hold, won’t be spent on anti-Prop 2 ads.

San Francisco (Aug. 21) — Yes on Prop. 2 – Californians for Humane Farms, the proponents of an anti-cruelty ballot initiative that will provide more humane treatment of California farm animals, announced today that millions of advertising dollars slated to be spent by the federal government and agribusiness giants campaigning against Prop. 2 have been put on hold while a federal court decides whether the advertising violates federal law.

We need stronger humane laws! Animal abusers have too many loopholes

This is as bad as it gets:
“Santa Cruz Animal Services officers confiscated 38 dogs and puppies Saturday after finding ‘more dead dogs that we could count’ and dog heads hanging from trees.”

Some crazy guy in Santa Cruz County, Calif., is found to be abusing dogs. Animal control officers discover an unknown number of dead dogs and rotting carcasses and dog feces throughout his house … starving dogs chained with no food or water … body parts everywhere … decapitated dog heads hanging from trees … puppies …
