*** CHIHUAHUA-MIX DOGS & PUPPIES:
This past Sunday someone dropped off 6 dogs in front of our house in Martinez (1 female chihuahua/dachshund mix, male chihuahua and 4 puppies (8-12 weeks old).  (See photo above) We rounded them up and got them inside and they are doing fine.  They are weaned from their mother, mostly crate trained and absolutely adorable/loving.  I have contacted many different rescue organizations in the area and they have all said no as they are at max capacity.  I have been told my best bet is to take them to the animal shelter.  They believe the puppies will be adopted, but don’t hold much hope for the 2 adults.  My family cannot continue caring for these dogs forever; we simply don’t have the time/capacity to do so.  I am trying to find an alternative to the animal shelter as I feel if I turn them in I will be abandoning these puppies again.  If you’d like to adopt one of them (or more!) I can be reached at annamaude@earthlink.net or my cell 925-917-9136.

Skyler the kitten used one of her 9 lives to get saved from a hawk

Gary:
It’s not every day that kittens fall from the sky.  But in mid-September, Anna witnessed just that.  Drawn to her backyard after hearing a ruckus and neighbor dogs barking, Anna found that a hawk had accidentally dropped a baby kitten onto her lawn and was circling above, getting ready to dive down and pick it back up again.

She threw open the door and rushed outside, scooping the severely underweight kitten up and scaring off the hawk.  Once inside, Anna evaluated the tiny Siamese mix and found that amazingly, she was still in one piece.  She obviously had been without food for quite some time, as every tiny bone in her fragile body was evident to the eye.

C.C. Humane Society opens Kitty Corner to help Animal Services Dept.

The month of March brought with it the much anticipated opening of one of the Contra Costa Humane Society’s newest programs: Kitty Corner!

Kitty Corner is a private shelter that houses some of Contra Costa County Animal Services’ surplus adult cats.  During kitten season, many adult cats find themselves out of luck as decreased space and heightened interest in young kittens means that adult cats (even as young as one year old!) are often overlooked. In addition, the current economy has caused surrender rates to increase while decreasing adoptions.

With this first-of-its-kind partnership between a local rescue group and Animal Services, CCHS hopes to help offload some of the feline frenzy that fills the public shelter every Spring, Summer and Fall by providing additional off-site space at CCHS.

1 week to go in Name Gary’s Kitten Contest. See new kitten photos here!

THE NEW ORANGE KITTEN AND HER NEW PAL
kitcat5

The new orange kitten is starting to take over my household … and that means, of course, that my other long-time cat, Newman, is NOT a happy trooper. Every time the kitten gets close to Newman, he lashes his fluffy tail and growls like a dog. The “terrified” kitten just stands there and smiles.

Newman hasn’t figured it out, yet, but the end of his world, as he now knows it, will soon be here.

Invasion of the 5-pound orange feral kitten

The orange kitten gets introduced to her new home
kiki3

(The post on poisoning ground squirrels is below this posting.)

Well, I did it. Friday afternoon when I got home from work I used all my worldly wiles and at great bodily risk … I CAPTURED the orange kitten and wrestled her into the house.

OK, OK … I reached down and gently picked her up and carried her to the spare bathroom and showed her the new place where she was going to live for the next few weeks. She purred all the way.
