Maddie’s Fund Aims To Find Homes for All Shelter Dogs and Cats in Three Bay Area Counties on June 9 & 10

Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon Expands into San Francisco County

Maddie’s Fund will hold its third annual Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon on June 9 and 10.  Due to the success of previous Adoptathons*, Maddie’s Fund has decided to grow the event – both geographically and financially.  This year, 13 shelters and rescue organizations from San Francisco County have been added to the roster.  A total of 62 groups will hold adoptions in more than 80 locations throughout Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties**.  In addition, Maddie’s Fund has set aside $3 million for this year’s Adoptathon to meet its goal of finding loving homes for 3,000 dogs and cats in all three participating counties.

Free adoptions of dogs and cats will be offered to qualified adopters.  In return, Maddie’s Fund will pay each shelter or rescue group from $500 to $2,000 per adoption***.

Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton and Bay Street Emeryville have partnered with Maddie’s Fund to host pet adoptions.  The San Francisco SPCA and Animal Care & Control will host a street fair event for San Francisco-based shelters during the Adoptathon located on the corner of Alabama and 16th Streets.  PETCO, PetSmart and Pet Food Express stores throughout the three counties have also offered to provide additional adoption locations.

Maddie’s Center Has a Home in Pleasanton, California

Maddie’s Fund, the family foundation of David and Cheryl Duffield, has just announced plans for a multimillion-dollar next generation animal care and teaching facility to be located in the Hacienda Business Park in Pleasanton, California.

The planned 90,000 square foot “Maddie’s Center” will include a pet adoption facility, conference center, teaching institute and rehabilitation wing. Maddie’s Center will pioneer new advances and train future animal welfare leaders in shelter medicine, nutrition, housing and technology adapted for animal care.

“Our focus will be on the hard-to-place dogs and cats and our model will be collaborative,” said Maddie’s Fund President, Rich Avanzino. “Maddie’s Center will be a testing ground for new marketing methods, protocols and remedies to make it easier and less costly to treat and place homeless pets who are sick, injured or poorly behaved. We’ll share what we learn with our neighbors and the entire animal welfare movement to help advance and sustain the nation’s no-kill achievements.”

There will be thousands of FREE adoptable cats and dogs available to qualified adopters — from 47 different animal shelters and nonprofit animal rescue organizations at 72 different locations in Contra Costa and Alameda counties on Saturday and Sunday. For more details plus a list of participating organizations, adoption locations and times, plus info on some (not all!) of the available pets, visit http://www.maddiesadoptathon.org

Below are just three of the pets you can adopt FREE this weekend from Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society, 2700 Ninth Street, Berkeley; open Saturday & Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.:

Officer Ted:
Abandoned by his mother and litter mates, this 5 week old kitten was living a lonely and uncertain existence inside a (non-running!) car engine in Berkeley. Officer Ted of the Berkeley Police Department was conducting routine police work, heard his mews, and discovered him living inside the engine, covered in grease. Luckily, aside for needing a meal and a very thorough scrubbing, the kitten was healthy. He was taken in by BEBHS, named after his kind rescuer, and sent to a foster home to finish growing up in a safe home environment.

Anyone for a latte? (Maddie’s Fund photo)
Maddies, anyone for a latte

Most of the information below, except for these great photos, was printed in my June 15 daily newspaper column in Bay Area News Group newspapers that are published in the San Francisco Bay Area. The preliminary adoption total in my column was “1,400.” I was contacted by Maddie’s and informed that figure has now been upgraded to 1,500 pets adopted last weekend. I hope it goes even higher! /Gary
