Willie Brown — ex-San Francisco Mayor, former California Assembly Speaker and present columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle — wrote the following in his column while I was on vacation in Panama these last couple of weeks:

“Memo to the 49ers: Hire Michael Vick.
“One, you need a quarterback. Two, he would increase ticket sales instantly.

“As for the firestorm that would erupt over Vick’s conviction for dogfighting, I say, do what they did in Philadelphia. Ride it out.”

Willie Brown is EXTREMELY knowledgeable when it comes to ANYTHING that has to do with politics. But he has a LOT to learn about the animal welfare community in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I’d be shocked if the 49ers even considered hiring Vick, but I’ve been shocked before. If they do hire Vick, keep your head down. Film (or is that flim-flam?) at 11:00. /Gary

Michael Vick: Should Raiders or Niners sign this man?

Monday (July 27), the ASPCA issued a statement from their President and CEO Ed Sayers in response to suspended NFL star and convicted dogfighter Michael Vick’s conditional reinstatement to the National Football League:

“Leaders are challenged to make difficult decisions on a daily basis — often under intense scrutiny and pressure,” said Sayers. “Commissioner Roger Goddell’s decisions surrounding the Michael Vick case are no exception. While his decision to reinstate Mr. Vick undoubtedly will be met with cheers by some and derision by others, it is clear that the Commissioner has been particularly thoughtful and has weighed every factor in his deliberations. The ASPCA can only offer him our gratitude for the gravity to which he has lent the issue of animal cruelty, as well as the provisions that the Commissioner has set forth to insure that Mr. Vick has a positive impact on the NFL and his community.

BAD RAP agrees Michael Vick is BAD NEWS for Oakland Raiders

Donna Reynolds, executive director of BAD RAP, the non-profit pit bull rescue organization that is trying to find homes for many of the dogs than Michael Vick abused in his dog fighting operation, dropped me a note commenting on my Nov. 3 blog, “Not sure making dog fighter and ex-Falcon Michael Vick a Raider is a good idea.”

Not sure making dog fighter & ex-Falcon Michael Vick a Raider is a good idea

There was a column on the Sunday sports pages in Bay Area News Group newspapers headlined, “Vick could be a dynamic fit in the Raiders’ offense,” and a sports story just below the column, “Could ex-Falcon Vick join Raiders out of prison?”

Both thought Vick would fit right in and be a “dynamic” addition to the Oakland Raiders pro football team.
