Daughter Goose takes over Mother Goose’s nest, lays eggs

Return of the Gosling

A new Canada goose has moved in to use the old nest left by Mother Goose! First time THAT has happened!

This appears to be a young goose. She’s smaller than Mother Goose, has sharper features and is a bit more slender. I think it’s one of Mother Goose’s goslings, maybe from last year. Bird chicks will often return to where they were hatched and build their own nests … or use their old nest if it’s still there.

Just for fun, I’ve named this goose, “Daughter Goose.” Personally, I do think this IS one of Mother Goose’s chicks. This nest on our newspaper’s roof is way too difficult for other geese to find. It’s on a small rooftop off the main roof and hidden by redwood trees. It’s just too much of a coincidence to have her move in and take over this nest just a couple of days after Mother Goose left with her chicks.

So Daughter Goose it is. And here is the link to click on so you can watch her on our Daughter Goose Webcam: http://www.mercurynews.com/pets-animals/ci_20470572

It takes 28 days for the eggs to hatch (I think there are 6 eggs in the nest). Based on when we think Daughter Goose laid these eggs, I’m guessing they’ll probably hatch sometime during the week of May 7-13.

We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime … ENJOY!! /Gary

Gary:
Finally got to Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek after the rain stopped.  Mom, Dad & babes were there and the only family there. Saw maybe 20 adults, but no other youngsters.

Ann & Bill:
Thanks for taking the time to track down Mother Goose and her family so my readers can see that they are doing well! Much appreciated.

The following information is what I wrote in today’s column for the Bay Area News Group newspapers (for those who don’t read my columns). It’s a roundup of what has happened to Mother Goose and her little family since her eggs hatched and the four goslings jumped off their rooftop nest site at the Contra Costa Times. Also more of your great photos!

Mother & Father Goose and their chicks made it! Check this video!

I’m happy to report another successful family raised by Mother Goose this year on the roof of the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, California.

Friday was a bit hectic with Mother Goose suddenly jumping up out of her nest, flying down to the ground and honking to her 4 chicks to jump off the roof so they could waddle over to the stream and pond at the business next door to the Times. Two of the eggs were sterile and didn’t hatch.

One of the chicks suffered a minor injury in jumping off the roof (stunned) and I carried it with me as Ray Saint Germain and I herded the geese over to the pond. The chick got stronger along the way and when we reach the pond, was ready to be released along with its other 3 brothers and sisters. Ray took video of the whole event and put together a beautiful little 5-minute video show (which I narrated) to show you what happened. You can enjoy it here: http://www.mercurynews.com/pets-animals/ci_20129776/streaming-video-mother-goose-2012-reality-show

Ann & Bill, of Concord, who occasionally send me beautiful photos to use here in my blog, came over Friday afternoon and took the photos above and below of the Mother Goose Family paddling and walking around the pond together. Thanks, Ann & Bill! Enjoy, everyone. This truly has been a team effort!  /Gary

It’s Friday morning, April 6, 2012. As of last night, four of Mother Goose’s six eggs had hatched. As I’m writing this, it is still too dark to see of the last two eggs have hatched. I’ll let you know when I find out.

You can also see for yourself by clicking on this link to our Mother Goose webcam: http://www.mercurynews.com/pets-animals/ci_20129776/streaming-video-mother-goose-2012-reality-show

In the meantime, check out these beautiful photos of the four chicks that have hatched to date by Doug Duran, one of our staff photographers. Talk about cute! Doug got these great shots through a window in the hallway that goes past the rooftop where Mother Goose has her nest.

Mother Goose: Eggs should hatch this week. Use our webcam to watch

The eggs should hatch sometimes this week!

Just thought I’d remind you that Mother Goose is still sitting in her nest on the roof of the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, incubating her eggs. Based on the 28 days it takes to incubate Canada goose eggs, and when I “think” I saw her lay the last egg (not positive), I think her eggs are due to hatch this week. There’s one way to find out exactly when … just watch! Here’s a link to our webcam:  http://www.mercurynews.com/pets-animals/ci_20129776/streaming-video-mother-goose-2012-reality-show

Have fun! /Gary

Mother Goose 2012 Reality Show

A Canada goose is nesting on the roof of the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek

A Canada goose we call “Mother Goose” has been nesting every spring on the roof of the Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, CA, for the last seven years.

She’s back again this year to raise a new family of goslings. As I’m writing this, we think she laid 4 eggs earlier this week. She usually lays 6-8 eggs.  If she finishes laying all her eggs this week … based on the approximately 28 days to takes to incubate those eggs, I’m guessing they should hatch sometime around the weekend of April 7-8 … which is Easter Weekend (Sunday is Easter)! Wouldn’t that be appropriate?

Keep your eyes posted here in my blog, and/or on my daily columns at http://www.contracostatimes.com/gary-bogue. I’ll be writing regular updates on what’s happening and trying to predict when the hatching event happens as we get closer to the date. I’ll definitely let you know when I spot a little beak pecking its way out of the first egg!

In the meantime, you can watch Mother Goose incubate, hatch and raise her babies yourself during daylight hours via our “Mother Goose webcam” at http://www.mercurynews.com/pets-animals/ci_20129776/streaming-video-mother-goose-2012-reality-show

Have fun! I sure will! /Gary

Mother Goose and 4 chicks jump safely from Times’ rooftop nest!

Mother and Father Goose and 4 babies. (Gary Bogue/staff)

WOW! I think I had almost as wild a day Sunday (yesterday) as Mother Goose and her 4 chicks did!

Holes started appearing in some of the eggs on Friday afternoon as the goslings starting pecking away trying to get out. I contacted Ray Saint Germain, our Senior Multimedia Producer, who set up the fantastic video cam that allowed us all to watch Mother Goose sitting on her eggs these last weeks, and alerted him about the holes. We both planned to monitor the nest via his cam over the weekend.

Webcam: Watch the Times’ rooftop Mother Goose nesting LIVE!

Mother Goose. Contra Costa Times photo
Mother Goose1

I wrote about the Contra Costa Times’ very own “Mother Goose” here on March 7. You can scroll down and read what I said. She is a Canada goose who started nesting on our rooftop six years ago and has returned every spring since then to raise a new family of goslings.

Watch our Mother Goose yourself during daylight hours via our Webcam: http://www.contracostatimes.com/news/ci_17555869

Watch her preening as she sits on her nest of redwood tree duff and incubates her eggs. Watch her stand up every so often to turn the eggs carefully with her beak to make sure they are being properly incubated. NOTE: When Mother Goose takes a break, she covers her eggs with nest material to keep them insulated and warm until she returns, so don’t panic if you see an empty nest. She’ll be back soon.

Now click on our Webcam and sit back and enjoy! /Gary
