Bay Area humane societies call for boycott of Ringling Bros. Circus

Below are excerpts from a press release I just received from Carrie Harrington, communications manager, of Marin Humane Society:

(NOVATO, CALIF., July 30, 2009) – The Marin Humane Society, Sonoma Humane Society, East Bay SPCA (Oakland), Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (San Mateo), San Francisco SPCA, and the Sacramento SPCA today publicly called for a boycott of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, citing the company’s routine abuse of animals. Ringling Bros. is scheduled to perform in Oakland, San Jose, and Sacramento this August. …

From the Animal Welfare Institute in Washington, DC:
Thursday (Feb. 5), former Ringling Bros. employees, Archele Hundley and Robert Tom, Jr. both testified that elephants endure both daily bull hook abuse and continuous chaining at the circus. They also described the severe beating of an elephant whose handler rammed a bullhook into the elephant’s ear and hit him for more than 40 minutes.

Ringling Brothers Stands Trial in Federal Court for Elephant Mistreatment

Sacramento group among plaintiffs in groundbreaking case

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and its parent company, Feld Entertainment, Inc., will finally stand trial to face charges that the circus mistreats its Asian elephants in violation of the federal Endangered Species Act. The case is more than eight years in the making.

Lawsuit says Ringling Bros. Circus keeps elephants in chains

Animal protection groups ask federal court to halt Ringling Bros.’ cruel chaining and confinement of endangered Asian elephants.

Washington, D.C. — Wednesday (May 21), a coalition of animal protection organizations and a former Ringling Bros. employee asked a federal district court in Washington D.C. to immediately order a halt to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (Ringling Bros.) cruel practice of shackling and confining endangered Asian elephants for days on end in a manner that prevents them from walking or even turning around in place.
