This walmart is actully in San Lorenzo, which is in Alameda county. Super Walmart's are usualy stopped by residents of the city. Well San Lorenzo is not a city and can't fight it. So I guess everyone will go to San Lorenzo for cheap grocerys. And that old Gemco spot is perfect.

Indeed, I never shop there, their merchandize might be cheap, but it is just an illusion,

I saw Wal-Mart open a store in Pullman (WA) and within two years most family owned stores in the down town area had closed. They just couln't compete with the cheap, imported goods. I saw former store owners working for Wal-Mart, probably on the public dole from the sound of it!

That is why I make a point of patronizing family owned or independent businesses,

Traffic be damned, folks better start worrying about higher taxes AKA 'The Walmart Tax' -->

CALIFORNIA

A 2004 study by the University of California at
Berkeley Labor Center found that Wal-Mart
employees’ reliance on public assistance pro-
grams, including health care, costs California $86
million annually, with health-related costs
accounting for $32 million.

According to the
study, 23 percent fewer Wal-Mart employees par-
ticipate in the company’s health care plan than is
typical for employees of large retailers in
general.

And Wal-Mart families use 40 percent
more in taxpayer-funded health care services and
38 percent more in non-health public services
(food stamps, Earned Income Tax Credit, subsi-
dized school lunches and housing) than the fami-
lies of all large retail workers.

San Leandro needs to bring in more upscale stores for the good of the city; the current Walmart already creates a traffic problem. Placing another Walmart in San Leandro at the odl Target location would create another traffic nightmare for Hesperian and Lewelling, which is already crowded with rush hour traffic. Why not bring in something more upscale, like a Trader Joe's or a Cold Stone Creamery?
