The John Muir Elementary community on Saturday afternoon will bid farewell to a school that has served Hayward students for more than 80 years. The campus will close down next month due to declining enrollment.
Whether it was your first teaching job or the first time you ever got your name written on a chalkboard, we would like to hear your memories of the campus.
Oh, and the goodbye picnic will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. at the school, 24823 Soto Road.

Friday, May 16th.
John Muir is a mere 3 & 5/8 miles distant from Park School which will absorb the John Muir School enroll- ment.
John Muir was located at an increasingly heavy traffic location at the corner of Soto Rd and Orchard. So, forget about walking if you live in the immediate neighborhood of John Muir because you would have to hold a child’s hand as you ventured along Soto Rd. to to Jackson St. where you have opportunity to cross over Jackson Street….. with an eye out for light violators in that speedy arterial.
Then walk along Jackson all that distance to Santa Clara where you turn to the right when searching for Larchmont at which street you travel east to where the street dead-ends. Shucks, it is an easy walk! We know this to be true because Dr. Barry Schimmel, our wonderful ass’t Supt. for Biz, declared that fact when the subject came up about two years ago at a meeting of HUSD Trustees..
But cheer up! Now that the Governor has solved the budget problem with sale of future profits found in the lottery operation, we ought esily find money available for yellow school buses.
