Mourn torn Zorn’s?

By Eric Kurhi
Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 at 10:06 am in Business, Development, General, Hayward, Odds & Ends.

To facilitate the plan to build a loop of one-way streets around Hayward’s downtown, the building that formerly housed Zorn’s restaurant was demolished Monday at the corner of A Street and Mission Boulevard. See video here!

Zorn’s has been closed and vacant for years, and some of us never had the opportunity to eat at the diner with the unusual name. Any memories of Zorn’s anyone?

The HayWord inquired with city officials today as to what might be next on the demo list, but they didn’t  know.

Watch for those chain-link fences: when one goes up around a building, the dozer isn’t far behind.

It is almost laughable that the authors of the ‘loop concept’ On Tuesday Junne 2, sent their esteemed, perpetual, President of “CATS” (Citizens (for) Alternative Trandportation Systems) to in effect, cancel the ‘loop traffic concept’ system which ‘her’ group initiated in the first place. CATS is a ‘front’ for HAPA, (Hayward Area Planning Association)(Two groups are better than one? Right? Well it gives the membership something to do!

It is important to note here that the HAPA group is not an offical arm of government. It is a collection of Citizen activista. a great many of whom do not live in Hayward City Llimits, led largely by that inspiring leader who wants to build 1,0000 units of housing upon or within ‘the quarry’ located just off Carlos Bee Ave about 1,000 feet east of Mission and four or five hundred feet higher than our formerly famous auto row!

1,000 units will be supported by just one hundred
    (100) auto parking spaces. ( one space per each of ten units, all of which 100 spaces will accomodate an onsite mini market as well as the spaces needed by the shuttle buses which will aid tenants (owners) to get to the BART Station.) A necesaaary amenity… after all who would want to “walk” to Bart then make the return trip on foot after a day’s labor?

That LEADERSHIP OFFERED BY THE FAMOUS RETIRED PROFESSOR (CAL STATE() OVERLOOKS THE OPPORTUNITY TO
PERFORM THE NEW CONSTRUCTION OF THE RELOCATED BRET HARTE MIDDLE SCHOOL; at THE 29 ACRE QUARRY SITE WHICH, AFTER ADJUSTRINBG NET USABLE AREA, DUE TO SLOPES, MIGHT THEN OFFER A SITE SIZED JUST RIGHT FOR A MIDDLE SCHOOL.

MORE INFORMED SOURCES, NOT KNOWN FOR INVOLVEMENT WITH ‘cats’ ASSURES US THAT THE RESTRICTION DUE TO TOPOGRAPHY ON THE PERSENT LOCATION, (OF A WORN OUT SCHOOL BUILDING) would be better utilized for housing due to it’s superior location to libary and BART.

It won’t be any more difficult to find market acceptance for the 1,000 unit idea AT BRET HARTE THAN AT THE QUARRY, IT’S JUST A MATTER OF ADVISING HELICOPTER PILOTS TO BE CAREFUL IN THAT AREA!

Of course the kids in that 1,000 units of housing WOULD be better off with the better proximity of the “E” Street location near the library and motion picture theater than they would at the quarry site.

DO NOT LET CHILDREN LIVE AT THE TOP FLOORS OF THE TOWERS. YOU SEE, SOME MIGHT USE AIR MAIL TACTICS WHEN TOLD TO “TAKE THE GARBAGE OUT!”

The perfessor is smarter than your average Hayward Citizen… so pay attention!

In the meantime, do not mourn for ‘Zorn’s’ It wasn’t bui;t to last forever!

I saw this just a few minutes ago. I was walking to Lucky’s.

Does anyone know whats going on around DeAnza Park and San Lorenzo Creek on City Center Drive? They are cutting down many trees and other stuff.

If I remember correctly I believe some signage is going to be installed at that location.

It’s about time–Zorn’s was a real eyesore for years! Never ate there, but I remember it as Chuck’s many years ago. It was a coffee shop with good eats!

Zorns had the best omelettes. Used to eat breakfast there before catching BART to work, or after a late night binge at Uncle Roys, and the Stein.

I cant wait for the City Center Buliding to reopen. its gonna be great!

but Centennial Hall should be saved. Its the last part of the old Hayward High School. It should be a histroic landmark.
