Portables are hard to maintain.... think about the fact that all classrooms have exterior walls made of plywood exteriors which are much harder to maintain... each has a sepatrate heater and air comditioning, restrooms are away from the units where the distance from classroojms to restrooms cause time loss....in other words exterior access; portables lack the super foundation controls in prevention against earthquake caused damage..... the foundations are mere tie downs in many cases and the units are mounted on tripod type columns; the sub-floor space is only covered by a piece of plywood often in contact with bare ground and thus conducive to the presence of termites.

Portables have alway been utilized as an expedient in sudden changes of enrollment. As in the example of Mexican families, here legally and who in many instances return to their place of origin so to be united with family at Christmas. Often, they fail to return, choosing to take a job which was made available in another location.... then there have also been instances when they bring other family members to Hayward who are fed up with L.A. Enrollment can thus be volatile and portables are hastened to the site while new enrollments are accomadted in the multi-purpose rooms for instructional purpose while HUSD searches for teachers and portables to move around.

Portables do not come cheap!

Longwood as an example has a website report of enrollment of 730 students... a number calculated at the beginning of the year... what it was after the Holidays is not publicly announced. It has in recent past been at 795 a close second to Cherryland

Longwood was built originally in 1953 for a cap-acity of 250 students. Nearby Helen Tutner was built by Mt. Eden School District about 1956 or '57 then when consolidated with Hayward Schools the Longwood school was exapanded to twice it's original size, some portables were added in the eraly 1980 period and then in 1998 the number of portables was almost doubled..... while helen Turner is now used as a day care center and could have been reopend as an anmnex to Lopngwood so that the two near by campuses would be operated by the same principal and ass't princiopal much like is doen at Bidwell/Treeview

Bid well was closed for 21 years and leased to HARD for about $7,000 per year. All the new houses built in the Harder/TENNYSON AREA DOWN ALONG INDUSTRIAL PKWY CAUSED THE TREEVIEW SCHOOL TO ACCEPT MORE THAN IT COULD HANDLE SO Treeview and Bidwell are now operated as one despite the fact they are separated by some street distances that impose difficulty for parents with kids at each location to say nothing of the probable communications/tours needed by administratuion staff. a TIME LOSS IS INVOLVED IN THE TRIPS BETWEN THE TWO!

So, the can of worms continues to open up... right?

Why I am glad the schools will be fixed, sometimes I think they should just make the schools out of portables. They are so much nicer than the buildings, and air conditioned. Then you could grow or compact as needed. Plus Hayward has a ton of portables...

Alex,

Sheperd Makes a good classroom space for Tyrell kids when that school is rebuilt.... do you think they will tear down the part that was rebuilt after the fire in 92 ? 03 ?

Are you sure HUSD is using it for offices? What Department? How long?

I was underthe impression that Markham would take some of the kids displacewd by work at Fairview etc.

Muir was closed then used fore day care ubtuil a disturbance on site by those not wamted.

East ASve has an addon structure so that present use is ok. Shepard ??/ I have no idea but isn't that close to tyrell? Probably some por6tables in use too . Is Muir on in the first group I thought it was Fairview, East Ave, MLK Middle school, and Schafer Park and Tyrell. those are the only schools which are involved with the first Bond issue.

Some schools like Longwood ( Buily in 1953 will not be re-built but only modernized what ever tha means1 Longwood money will be deoendent upon success of the last Bond Vote scheculed in 2020. How do you modernizew a school which is mi=ostly portables... the original was built in 1953 and an add on occurred abot 5 years later then 10 or 12 portables thrown on the lot about 10 or 12 years ago.... with up to 799 kids hbewating the hell out of it..... but HUSD WORKEWD HARD AND NOW THE ENROLLMENT IS JUST 730.... THE RULES MUST HAVE CHANGED BECAUSE THE OLD'RULES REQUIRED MORE LAND AREA FOR THAT MANY.....OH WELL IT JUST LATINOS AND FRICAM AMERICANS MOSTLY..... SO A REMODEL WILL DO! RIGHT?
