More accolades for Mt. Eden band program

mehsbandKQED radio had a nice piece on Kevin Cato and the Mt. Eden High School band program over the weekend. It’s worth a listen and a look.

You can find more information and read more stories about the program at the MEHS band Web page. That’s where we found this flikr picture, taken by Melanie Work.

Congrats on the latest victory, Cato and band!

I heard this on the radio and was very excited to hear a positive story about Hayward. It’s a very inspiring story and points out the value of “extras” in school like music. The kids were saying that their success in music taught them how to work hard and be successful in their studies as well. I hope that the school board appreciates the value of these programs as well as the value of the pride it brings to the students and the community.

Right on, Cheryl! Ask any middle or high school music teacher, and they’ll tell you that in order for them to do their job, music instruction needs to start in elementary school. Just imagine what the Mt. Eden band would sound like if the kids started learning about music in the 8th grade instead of in the 1st grade. Save our specialty classes in the lower grades!
