Faith Ringgold spared, but may become ‘school within a school’

Here’s the story on that part of last night’s meeting.

I will update this post with more information when I have a moment, but I have some other things to get done right now so I figured I’d at least get that out there.

Since when it comes to this subject I seem to be the history expert on the blog, I will just provide some background. When Charquin was a stand alone program/school they were housed once before at Markham. At time they occupied one wing of the school and the principal of Markham was also their administrator. It worked very well. When they moved to the Laurel site, there was a teacher in charge and the Markham principal would travel to Laurel when needed. Under both situations we functioned very well.
It will be nothing new to be now called a “school within a school” as the saying goes “Been there done that”.

I was glad to see that the decision was not made at the expense of other students in the district. I was also glad to see that the counselor pink slips are being recinded. It thrilled me no end to see them cut the legal fees by $250thousand!

  • K Rocchio

I am glad that we were able to look at ways to keep our programs for students and make them run as cost efficiently as possible. I hope the follow through on this item is discussed with the community. I also hope the FR community continues with some of the suggestions they offered regarding fundraising, flexibility and partnerships.

I expect that the same effort is being put forth to make certain the DO is being run as prudently as some of our schools. It is time.

Has anyone else tried to access the agenda from the HUSD and found the connection gone from the “new” website? How aggrevating this is.

  • http://None Kathi Booth

    Teresa,
You can still find them under the Month/year. You click that and then the agendas come up. I find it so interesting that they do all they can to impede access. The last agenda is for the meeting of the 25th of May.

I have been thinking about this group of people who gather here on Eric’s blog for awhile now. At first, I was very grateful that there was a space/time that Hayward area citizens could communicate with each other about the events of the day. Certainly my own blog and “People of Hayward” Facebook page had failed.

Then, I got distracted by the relationship between John Kyle and Kathi Booth, an old friend of mine. I thought maybe I could help mediate their conflict. Of course I failed to do that too. I even left the group twice because it felt so bad to me.

I might add that I have been also been distressed by the nastiness of the Internet in general- outright lies, people hiding behind their pseudonyms while they said offensive things they would never say face to face, ignorance, what could easily be called evil by those who are religious – and I am not talking about sex. You know what I mean.

I tend to go to sites where there is a higher level of discussion. I also seek a variety of views and then make an educated guess about reality. This is all in tune with my own level of education and experience.

Nevertheless, as a scientist, I have a great interest in evolution and especially the evolution of human consciousness. I see that we are each unique and yet part of the same underlying connection to the evolution of the universe. It seems to me that our job as humans is to see who we are, what our individual view is and then contribute that view to the whole to solve the problems of the day.

Anyway, as we have evolved, our technology has evolved to keep up with us. The Internet is now the location of Teilhard de Chardin’s “noosphere” where we are connecting with one another for the first time to express our individual views.

Not long ago, it became clear to me that what is happening on the Internet and on the microcosm of this blog is no less than a therapy group! There is no psychotherapist facilitating the healing process, so it is pretty messy and not safe for all but those who would hide behind fake names and who just don’t care any longer what others think. There is no censorship here as there always had been in the old media. That allows stuff to come out that has never seen the light of day before and a great cultural, class war of differing pointes of view has been created.

In spite of a lot of pressure from me and others here, Eric refuses to fulfill the role of monitor. He is after all not a therapist but a reporter that probably was trained to be an impartial observer. He may even be getting some personal satisfaction from all the juice.

As a result of this, the kind of group we have here directly reflects what is in us and that seems to be coming out! We have all been around Hayward for awhile. I would say that Kathi Booth and John Kyle certainly have been deeply involved as have others. They are older people and have a longitudinal, historical view of reality based on their whole life experiences. That view is valuable in ways that a cross sectional view is not. (google it) While they have been the center of attention on this group, I have noticed that certain others play a role too in the group dynamics. Michael Moore is pretty deeply involved too, as well as Teresa, K Roccio, Monica and others. Even Fernando Hernandez played a role by leaving and so do I. Furthermore we aren’t alone. We are being observed by an unknown number of lurkers who are watching and getting something but not contributing anything.

What is all this coming too? Well, in therapy, after a time, people begin to find allies who offer each other mutual support. In time, after much storytelling, people begin to feel compassion for each other’s stories. That is happening here and all over the world now. This technology enables us to be part of what is happening in the near East and makes those revolutions possible now in a way they never were before. It did the same in Wisconsin. When people continue to connect and have meaningful conversations, they tend to fight the power of the few with the power of the many. This is the way we will all overcome those who would dominate the human spirit.

    PART II

Well, I know this is long winded, but to tell you the truth I need support today and appreciate any effort you make to understand me and, perhaps feel some compassion for me.

I know that sounds really needy, but maybe you can identify with the source of my problem. You see, last week I failed to change the minds and hearts of the Planning Commission who once more acted to support development of the Burbank Residual Site in spite of the neighborhood opposition. (I admit my neighbors don’t come out in force, but the few that did, were unanimous in their opposition.) Knowing that my neighbors have little hope of making a difference and are not politically active. I wrote a long letter to the commissioners summarizing my view and making a plea to allow my neighbors time to organize around this central parcel of land before it was lost forever.

Last night I went to city council’s Sustainability Committee meeting to speak about the way that the city is approaching the issue of “healthier lifestyles and communities” which, I fear will not serve our community very well. My concern is that it is another top down approach rather than a more balanced partnership with the neighborhoods. I am convinced that the way of dominating citizens in Hayward does not work and is a waste of money. Rather than allow me to express my thoughts as well as I could, I was cut off. I even pushed for a few extra minutes after, but I had lost energy.

Later, the mayor even went so far as to make a joke at my expense and that of Sandy Frost from the Hayward Community Gardens who had also spoken about the process.

As the meeting progressed, I found my whole inner self objecting. What kind of city do we live in? How can they spend all the money they do to get the community engaged and then exclude Hayward residents like me who are already engaged and volunteering huge blocks of time to studying the issues? Are they public servants or not? What makes them think they know what’s best for us? And then, when they admit they don’t know something, rather than look to the people who live here, they go spend more money to hire consultants from other communities, people who have no real stake in Hayward, but only in Hayward’s money. I could feel all my past history with HUSD and their closed processes coming up. I got angrier and angrier until I couldn’t be quiet any longer. I jumped up and objected.I was out of order, calling for a point of order! I declared that I didn’t think what they were doing was even legal, much less transparent. It was only then that they began to hear me and referred the staff to the city attorney.

I went back to my seat and Sandy and the man next to her, who were concerned about my health, asked if I needed to be taken home. I told them that I was all right, “I’m just mad.” Just then a real estate agent who had been sitting in front of me the whole time leaned back and said, “Welcome to Hayward.”

    Thank you for listening.

  • Teresa Conti

Don’t give up if you really feel passionate about something. Even after its built, you can still get it taken out.

  • Sherry Blair

    Thank you,Teresa.

  • John W. Kyle

    Ms. Blair

The fact that you write well is evidence that are in possession of education beyond what was available at High Schools and that you also have education in religious matters. In your two recent lengthy contributions there seems to be an intrusion of doubtr or loss of faith, at least as that might be detected in a community as large as that of HUSD’s boundaries.

One of the building blocks of Christian faith is ‘Hope’… do not lose that particular item in your outlook.

Be aware that on Tuesday morning I hand delivered a letter HUSD Administration offices addressed to Ms.. Brunner and the members of the Board on the subject of some basic ideas, even including what to do with the ‘remainder’ parcel ( Darwin) after all the moves have been made as I described it in item #3 dated May 13th under Kurhi’s lead article entitled “Big hits” in latest idea for Faith Ringold…. etc.

My letter to Brunner et al will become a matter of public record available to the public after the next formal meeting in which the ‘secretary of the board will announce receipt of that letter’ You really ought tune in to a more authentic understanding of the route out of our ’little’ economic quagmire which wreaks havoc upon the budget due to lack of business acumen within the community as well as the Board of Trustees.

Count on me to provide information to the recently avowed candidate…. A bright lady… who will make it, if not sucked into a repeat of the recent triumvirate of which two thirds left the scene after she declared for the two year seat rather than one of the four year seats then available.

Frankly, the steps I outlined at # 3 as indicated above…. would lead directly to a long term recovery of the budget process if seriously followed.

Watch for your opportunity to examine the public record. Cheer up! Otherwise O could mail a copy direct to your home if you care to ‘risk; that! At near 81 years and under leash of wife in a 58 year marriage… I am harmless despite the antagonism displayed by another contributor.

  • Sherry Blair

I appreciate your comments and you are right about hope. But I am human and in touch with my feelings and they suffer through these ordeals. I didn’t used to care about stress, but I learned the hard way that it adversly affects my health, so I have to pay attention. A little support really helps.

I have noticed that at your age you are still active and involved. That is kind of amazing. Maybe that leash is a good thing? Do you find the school district responsive to your contributions?

  • John W. Kyle

    Ms. Blair;

Do I find the school distruoct more responsive? Yas and no! Mt. Armas was quick to respond and agreeed that the district ‘blew it’ when it signed a disadvantageous lease to the Darwihn School site.

I have offered a way to rectu=ify the problem while still making the SDarwin site more available to development under a shortg term lease to a devekloper for ten years at which time the revversion might reeacj $30,000,000 in sales ebvenyt at conclusion of developer interest.

The FR transfer to Treeview is fraught with dannger due to the extremmely close involvment with Hayward fault line….. those of town parehnts ought be looking at possible partial uise opf a school in San Lorenzeo noew leased out to Redwood Christuian Church… that arrangfement in my miond might be a violation of Church and Sytate matters….

FR folks aresumed unaware of ARE ASSUMED UNP-ADVISED OGF DANGER INVOLVED WITH TREEVIEW. sOILS ENG=INEER ANALYSIS OF THAT SITE SEEMS TO ME TO BE TROUNLESOME WITH IT’S ENTANGLEMENT WITH aLQUIAST pRIOLO ACT AS DIS THE THERE PREVIOUS REPORTS BY OTHER ENGUI=INNEERS.

i YTRIED TO BRING THAT TO ATTENTION OF bOARD PRIOR TOE bOND mEASURE ELECTION… FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE i VOTED AGAINST A BOND MEASURE INTENDED FOR EDUCATION. i AM FRANKLY STRILL BITTER ABOUY=T THAT AND IF CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS SUBMIYTTED BY ME ARE IGNORED, ONCE AGAIN, YOU MAY DEPEND UPON SOME FIREY REMARKS AT PUBLIC COMMENTS.

nOTHING RAISES THE HACKLES OF THIS oLD IRISH ‘CRUSADER’ AS DOES THE ‘PUNITIVE ACT’ OF BEING IGNORED ESPECIALLY WHEN HE POINBTSD THE WAY OUT OF THE PRESENT CASH PRERDICAMENT.

wHAT YOU NEED IS A REASONABLE CASE TO JOIN INTO SOMETHING WITH EXCELLANT CHANCE OF SUCCESS IN NEAR DATE ACTIONS OF THE bOARD. sEARCH FOR A COPY OF MY LETTER TO bOARD WHEN IT REACHES PUBLIC ACCESS OPPORYTUNITY AFYTER NEXT FORMAL MEETING.

nOTHING WILL GET YOU OUT OF THE ‘DOLDRUMS’ LIKE A GOOD SUCCESSFUL FIGHT WITHOUT A BLOODY NOSE!

Why is hayward suddenly so short on money? I know many businesses left and many are hindered by the great and useless road project, but has some truth finally come to roost?
