Third round of interviews for HUSD superintendent

By Eric Kurhi
Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 at 10:48 am in General, Hayward, Schools.

UPDATE 10/3: While they are not releasing names because of privacy concerns, Hayward trustees are making a trip to Compton tomorrow to interview people in regards to one of two final candidates for the superintendent post. The other candidate is employed by a Northern California district, said Board President Lisa Brunner. She said they’re “two very different candidates, with different strengths.”

Hayward Unified announced a pair of special, closed-session meetings on Saturday and Monday to interview superintendent candidates. Board President Lisa Brunner said they have five people lined up, but of course names are confidential at this point. Here’s the previous info on how that supt. search has been going.

Speaking of school, in case you missed it, there are some changes to the parking lots at Cal State East Bay. Don’t forget to update your campus maps.

“In the parking area, two lots will be combined, and the names of three others will be shifted.

Lots H and G will be combined and redesignated as Lot H.

Lot F will be renamed Lot G. Lot E1 will be relabeled as Lot E, while Lot E2 will become Lot F.”

    Got that?

Anybody watch last night’s circus more commonly called the Board of Education meeting? Lasted until 12am. The most interesting part was seeing the “rift” between Ms.Duran and her Associate Superintendent Ms. Sanchez. It seems that Ms. Sanchez thinks that she can simply place expenditures for consultants on the agenda without consultation with the superintendent. The BOE objected to $46,000 for one, asking why it was that we could not and did not check to see if the services could be provided by our own staff at the district and local schools. When prodded by the board Ms. Duran agreed that there should have been more thought put into the item before it was brought to the board. She also agreed that every means possible should be investigated to lower the oosts. The board did not approve the consultant. In another consultant request the same problems existed; no consultation with the superintendent; no real proof that this was a necessary expenditure…the board did not approve it either.

While I do not really like Ms. Duran, her professional approach and attempt to answer the board’s questions was to be admired. It was clear that this was an embarassment to her and that she was not happy with Ms. Sanchez’s attempts to promote her own agenda.

Any rumors on how the search is going for a new leader? Better than last time I hope…Why do they never select from inside the district?

  • John Kyle

    Qdrn;
If it appears that ‘they’ never select a person from inside the district, the ‘problem’, if it is such as to be viewed in that light, is that whomever would be selected under that scenario, might be afflicted with ‘baggage’ carried into the Supt. Job. Baggage is often found in the form of ‘sniping’ from within the ranks and / or some imagined ‘wrong’ perpetrated by the candidate or some disgruntled co-worker.
There is one person presently close to the top, who seems well informed but unfortunately, that party has a strong tendency to be ‘short’ with public and staff alike….. bad news to hire that type. ONE OF MRS. DURAN’S STRONG POINTS IS, HER WILLINGNESS TO HEAR OUT OR READ A SATATEMENT AND RESERVE A COMMENT UNTIL SHE FULLY UNDERSTANDS ALL THE RAMIFICATIONS…. HER RESPONSE IS USUALLY TACTFUL AND EXPLANATORY IF SHE DIAGREES!
HOPEFULLY THERE WILL SOON BE A SEELCTION OF A PARTY WITH THE STAMINA NEEDERD TO PUT UP WITH SOME ( NOT ALL) OF HEA MEMBERS WHOSE ITENSITY OF PURPOSE FAILS THEIR ABILITY ‘TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE’.
WHAT SURPROSES ME IS THAT MS. BRUNNER HAS INDICATED A NEED TO INTREVIEW 5 OR 6 INDIVIDUALS THROUGH THE WEEKEND AND INTO THE COMING WEEK. CLEARLY, THE STIPEND PAID TRUSTEES IS NOT COMMENSURATE WITH THE TIME SPENT ‘ON THE JOB’.
SURELY THE NUMBER OF CANDIDATES WILL SEE AT LEAST ONE WHO HAS RESEARCHED THE HISTORY OF HUSD, OVER THE PAST 20+ YEARS; WE NEED A PERSON WHO WALKS INTO THE JOB WITH KNOWLEDGE CERTAIN THAT THE Last four were in effect, fired!
Successive firings, as revealed TO ANY PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATE intelligent enough to search the records, would tend to raise flags sufficient to turn away exceptionally good prospects. Something endemic exists at HUSD which led to the inevitable ‘encouraged’ resignation or outright dismissal of ALL OF the previous four. I never understood the rationale for dismissal of Marlin Foxworth! Me thinks HEA might have been overly involved with that firing! The last individual did not leave soon enough!
Not the largest part but certainly a considerable factor is the continuous unwarranted, dumb remarks seen in the attitude of ‘old folks’ in the example of #2 ABOVE…. THE FIRST LINE IN THAT SUBMISSION MAKES A CASE IN SUPPORT OF WHAT I SAY HERE.

Demeaning references to the meetings of Trustees of HUSD IS OFFENSIVE TO THOSE FOLKS WHO CAST THEIR VOTE FOR ANY OR ALL OF THE CURRENT BOARD. WHJENWAS THE LAST TIME ANY OF US WITNESS THAT ‘SNIPER’ STAND UP AT PUBLIC COMMENTS AND RENDER A WELL THOUGHT OUT BIT OF CONSTRUCTIVE CONTRIBUTION TO THE TRUSTEES?

WITH THE LAST SENTENCE IMNMEDIATELY ABOVE, YOU FIND THEREIN AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A COMPARISON WITH THE COMNNTENT OF THE FIRST SENTENCE IN # 2 ABOVE. THE AUTHOR HAS YET TO OFFER PROACTIVE, CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM SUPPORTED BY WELL FOUNDED RATIONALE!

Some folks sleepwalk…all day long! and more than half the night! Especially true amongst elderly, self rightous females,as demonstrated at item 5 above!

Any news on the great superintentdent search? This seems to be harder than getting the Mission Blvd street project finished. Which is still isn’t even close.

  • qodrn

I gather the latest round of interviews didn’t go so well. Any news?

  • John Kyle

    Qodrn;

In the whirled of HUSD oilitics… no news is gud noose!

  • Cynthia Rodriguez

    John Kyle,

    Noose?

So you are the old white man who speaks at all the board meetings complaining? Kathi Booth, I see what you type about all the time pertaining to this man! Looks like John Kyle can be a bigot too. It would seem like you are since you spelled news correctly the first time.

    Wow!

Breathes there a blog so dead ?

  • http://BoothmanSr@sbcglobal.net Kathi Booth

    Cynthia,
This site is not monitored. I have complained and so have countless others who have dealt with this man’s rants. It seems that there is nothing that can be done to stop adult cyber-bullies or those who spew out disgusting words.

I continue to blog because I believe that the few who do read this blog want to communicate about what is happening in HUSD. I have years of “experience” with the school district and always hope that I can provide information, history or some thoughts to stimulate people to action to help our students.

  • John Kyle

    Cynthia,

’tis true! Ms. Booth has answsers to all things great and small at HUSD. Which of them are based in fact is left up to alertness of readers.

The trouble is that her answers seldom fit the evolving problems, as they might have done 25 or 30 years ago ( or earlier ?)

IF YOu BOTHER TO GO BACK INTO HER INITIAL BLOG ENTTRIES, which started in August of 2010, YOU WILL LEARN THAT THIS ‘GRADUATE OF LAW SCHOOL’ WHO DID NOT BOTHER TO TAKE THE LAW EXAM…. DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SIMPLE DETRACTION AND FACTUAL RECOUNTING OF FACTS SURROUNDING THE PERFORMANCE OF HUSD’S STAFF AND TRUSTEES..

I strongly recommend that you sift through her Auguat 2010 contributions, when she discoverd the blog, and then ask her to explain her alliance with a Contributor named “Obama NEW AGE” whose contributions were often openly libelous.

IT SHOULD OPEN YOUR EYES !

Frankly, I thought that, quite recently, I did a good job of defendsing COR (Congregations Organized for Renewal) which was attacked by Mr. Moore as being a some sort of tool for intrusions of Religious factions into Government and administration of HUSD. Neither Mr. Moore or Ms. Booty rose up to offer a reply! A simple recognition of their own shortcomings???

Now if you intend to be a serious contributor be certain you have your facts straight… which then offers some anopportunity to attack you personally for having the gaul, or if you will, the ‘effrontery’ to have a different opinion than those two while going so far as to popint out their deficiency!

  • http://BoothmanSr@sbcglobal.net Kathi Booth

Mr. Kyle: More blah blah blah and incorrect facts and preposterous assumpions.

    Cynthia:
Careful, if that is your real name he will begin his search for where you live. I suggest that if you want to continue on this blog that you use a “blog name” so that he cannot spew vicious garbage out there for others who may know you to read.

  • qodrn

    Thanks Eric.

  • Cynthia Rodriguez

It is my real name Kathi or maybe I should put up a fake name. I have read a few comments on this blog, but do not like it too much.

And John, what did you mean by noose in your comment above? You did not answer the question.

  • Michael Moore

Cynthia, this is a great potential blog to deal with all things Hayward. It has not met its potential, due in no small part to an unregulated troll. I do not respond or even acknowledge the troll’s existence. Feeding trolls allows them to exist and that fact is one that ABAG should own, but does not. They should moderate the Hayword but they do not.

  • Sherry Blair

Thanks for the new (to me) word, Michael. Here’s what Wikipedia says:

“Application of the term troll is subjective. Some readers may characterize a post as trolling, while others may regard the same post as a legitimate contribution to the discussion, even if controversial. Like any pejorative term, it can be used as an ad hominem attack, suggesting a negative motivation.

Regardless of the circumstances, controversial posts may attract a particularly strong response from those unfamiliar with the robust dialogue found in some online, rather than physical, communities. Experienced participants in online forums know that the most effective way to discourage a troll is usually to ignore it, because responding tends to encourage trolls to continue disruptive posts — hence the often-seen warning: “Please do not feed the trolls”.

  • http://BoothmanSr@sbcglobal.net Kathi Booth

    To All,
I do try to ignore…it is just difficult sometimes when there are personal attacks or when misinformation regarding someone’s character or deeds is posted..I seem to have a hard time allowing ugly postings about me or anyone else to just roll off my back. I am practicing :0)

  • John Kyle

    Cynthia Rodriguez,

    Cynthia;
Us of the word noose is a play on words…. news from Booth is noose around the necks of employees and trustees of HUSD. The poor lady seldom offers a word of encouragement (or apology) in her rant. I suggest that you might visit the archives of this blog starting with the month of August in year 2010. In my rebuttals to her rant I repeatedly asked, Ms. Booth if she knew the difference between licentious speech and freedom of speech It soon became apparent to me why the woman who claims possession of a degree from a law school, did not bother taking the Bar Exam. In August of 2010 she openly encouraged rant from another contributor using the nom de plume “Obama new age” was, in total, pure rant reflecting a total lack of civility and character in that contributor.
Claiming a degree from an un-named law school, Ms. Booth, by her own admission, did not bother to take the bar exam. I came to a full understanding of her failure when she consistently failed to answer my often repeated request to explain to me why it was that she did not reply to my request to define the difference between licentious speech and freedom of speech.
In her multitudinous contributions to the blog Ms. Booth joined ‘Obama new age’ in placing words upon the blog which reflects some inner longing for vengeance upon one of the current trustees. Sustained, licentious attacks upon the character and reputation of that trustee, who had been initially appointed by the four remaining trustees, (after the sudden resignation of Sarah Gonzales, early in year 2010) have no other explanation other than what might eventually be drawn from the mouth of Ms. Booth. The appointee won the seat, in his own right, within seven or eight months of the initial appointment. Her intended victim just shrugged his shoulders and made no reply to that poor woman.
Ms.Booth is unable to defend her rationale for her attacks delivered through the blog in year 2010. She even refused a request to explain the difference between licentious speech and freedom of speech. Which offers insight into her failure to attempt the bar exam.
Mr. Moore made his first recognizable contribution in late August 2010, I was initially impressed with man’s erudition but he raised the hair on the back of my neck with his remarks about the R.C.Church and his association of the Current Pope with the German army near the end of the war when very old men and very young males were rounded up and pressed into combat. Some of his statements were cause for me to complain to Review’s management, so Moore quieted down until recently when he stated that COR (congregations organized for renewal) was an incipient attempt to bring religion into HUSD classrooms.

I ANSWERED THAT LAST THOUGHT WITH A CONTRIBUTION WITHIN THE BLOG JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO.Curious? Look into my responses to Cynthia somewhere in mid September 2011. Moore pretends to ignore the bit!

Cynthia, my appearance at public comment period at a recent HUSD Board meeting had to do with a major criticism I have registered over the current condition of the site residence located upon the grounds at Longwood School. Later in that meeting Trustee Jesus Armas, replied to my concerns to the effect that the site resident program ought be re-instituted and expanded to all the HUSD School campuses.

More on that in my next scribble! It’s a promise!

  • John Kyle

    All;

I suspect that by the end of the week we will be advised of the name of the chosen Supt. for HUSD.
