It’s a Big Mike mystery!

Only Big Mike's big dirty footprints remain.

UPDATE: Story on Big Mike being found in Castro Valley.

Here’s our story on Hayward’s own Muffler Man disappearing from the Mission Boulevard spot where he’s stood for decades. I was first alerted to his absence by a keen-eyed reader last Thursday, and after talking with nearby merchants it sounds like that’s the same day he was chopped up and trucked off. They say it took about four hours to do the deed. For more on Mike and his brethren, this site is always worth revisiting for fascinating lore on Muffler Men and photos of all the variants.

So I’m hoping now that the story is out, someone will contact me and let me know what’s going on with Mike. Will let you all know if they do.

And yes, I am still here.

Here’s some news from the Hayward Area Historical Society. Each year, they honor local residents, organizations and businesses that are history minded, and for 2011 they’re seeking the public’s help in coming up with some candidates. They’d like to hear from you by the end of the mo nth.

Click on the link at left to cue the theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey."

The Daily Review received one in 2006, a few years before I landed at the paper. I took a photo of the black obelisk award, attempting for some kind of dramatic perspective.

Faith Frazier, San Leandro councilmember and women’s advocate

From a April 13, 1974 story after Frazier was elected to the City Council.

From a April 13, 1974 story after Frazier was elected to the City Council.

We had a story in today’s paper about the passing of Faith Frazier. For space reasons, we couldn’t write more than that, but I received a lot of information that is included below. The bio is courtesy of former San Leandro Mayor Shelia Young.

“I’ll tell you something,” said her son, Carl. “My mom has devoted more years in San Leandro to civic issues, political issues than probably anyone else other than Jack Maltester. My mom goes back to before the city was really a city.”

“She passed away peacefully at Kaiser Hospital last Sunday, February 20, 2011, with her family by her side,” wrote Young in an e-mail.  “She was an incredibly gifted woman who helped numerous people throughout her lifetime learn things about government and how it affects us all. She will be missed by scores of electeds throughout the city of San Leandro and Alameda County. Clearly, she was a legend in her later life and accomplished much by way of leadership and knowledge sharing.” Read the rest of this entry »

Share your story for Hayward museum exhibit

It’s oral and written history time over at the Hayward Area Historical Society, where they want to hear your fondest memories of Hayward, Cherryland, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Mt. Eden, Ashland, Fairview or old Russell City. They’re putting together an exhibit for the new museum space, which is under construction in the former Kumbala building at Foothill and Russell in downtown Hayward. The exhibit, scheduled to open in the fall, will feature memories of residents tied to the Hayward area, both of the recorded and written variety.

We were just talking about good ideas for the Hayward mural, here’s another chance to share some of your treasured or poignant moments. Deadline is April 30.

Read some examples, find out how to submit after the jump. Bonus: Historical photos, courtesy HAHS! Read the rest of this entry »

Voice of the Giants talks Hayward

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS VS NEW YORK METS

Voice of the Giants Jon Miller with his wife, Janine. They met in Hayward -- Janine lived across the street and would babysit Jon, who is five years younger.

Jon Miller, the announcer for the champion San Francisco Giants, was honored by the Hayward City Council earlier this month. You can watch the video of the  Dec. 14 meeting, which had Miller talking about the city where he grew up and developed his announcer voice.

Miller said it all started with Strat-O-Matic Baseball, a table-top game that uses dice and charts to replicate ballgames.

“I found it was a lot more fun if I broadcast the games. I would while away the hours in my bedroom, playing Strat-O-Matic Baseball. Everybody I knew was out doing things you did in summertime in California. Friends would say, ‘Let’s go to Half Moon Bay, do a little surfing,’ And I’d say, ‘I’d love to but I got the Cards playing the Cubs, after that it’s the Giants-Dodgers series and I’ve been waiting for that series for weeks.’”

He even offered the Council a demonstration of how he’d run the games, playing the part of the announcer, a cheering crowd, the PA guy, even the ballpark organist.

Miller grew up off Highland Boulevard, and attended Hillcrest Elementary School before graduating from Hayward High. He said it was the first time he’d been to Hayward City Hall since he was 15, when he was on an all-star little league team that won the pennant for the area.

“What a team we had,” he said. “The mayor, a fellow by the name of Jack Smith, invited our team to city hall, the other city hall, down the street, and they took a photo of our team and the mayor on the steps of city hall, and put it  in the Hayward Daily Review. Somewhere, in a box somewhere, deep down inside of a box of things I haven’t looked at in  years,  is that photo.”

It’s a fun presentation, worth a look and a listen. Starts at the 9 minute mark. Also, the Chron had a pretty nice profile on Miller when he was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Holzmeister wins history award

KarenHistoryAwardsphotoLongtime Daily Review reporter Karen Holzmeister (on the left, with Hayward Area Historical Society Vice President Gay Ostarello), who retired from the paper last summer, was one of the honorees at the HAHS awards dinner last week.

Karen was an institution in the newsroom, someone whose mind-vault contained a wealth of information about southern Alameda County that can’t be found in any google search. She remains sorely missed — not just by Review staff but by community members as well. Then again, she’s missed particularly by Review staff, who were treated to a delicious sherry cake when she was in the neighborhood and stopped by earlier this week.

Karen’s been busy in her retirement, having done some traveling including a trip to the Middle East.

Here’s an item in Carol Thornberry’s column about another recent honor Karen received.

And here’s the HAHS press release on their event, which included some other local notables: Read the rest of this entry »
