Marina fundraisers for worthy causes

SAN LEANDRO — Some groups that do a lot of good in the local communities are hosting spring fundraisers at the San Leandro marina.

On Saturday, April 26, Stepping Stones Growth Center will hold its 12th Annual Every Step Counts Walk/Run at the marina, starting at 8:30 a.m. Every Step Counts is a family-friendly event that encourages people with developmental disabilities to be active. The $30 entry fee includes a T-shirt, goodie bag, refreshments and a chance to win prizes. To register, go to www.firstgiving.com/everystepcounts/12th-annual-every-step-counts-event.

The Mourning Mothers Walk to Prevent Violence takes place on Saturday, May 10. KGO’s Cheryl Jennings will emcee the walk, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $20 donation includes a T-shirt and lunch. The walk is sponsored by 1000 Mothers to Prevent Violence, started by Lorrain Taylor, a Hayward woman who lost her twin sons to violence. To register, call 510-581-0100, email mothers1000@aol.com or go to www.1000mothers.org.

Family Emergency Shelter Coalition will have its Shelter Shuffle on May 21 starting at 9 a.m. Registration is $10 and includes snacks and a T-shirt; those taking part are encouraged to sign up sponsors. Last year’s shuffle raised $35,000. To register, go to www.firstgiving.com/fesco or email shuffle@fescofamilyshelter.org and ask for a registration form. The shelter provides emergency housing for families and works to get families off the street and off welfare.

Hayward challenge grant to aid homeless

HAYWARD — A $3,000 challenge grant to help the homeless has been issued in honor of community activist Jim Forsyth, who died last year.

Proceeds will go to the South Hayward Parish Joe White Movement, named for a homeless man who died while sleeping outside on a cold night in December.

Every dollar donated through the end of February will be matched; donations are tax-deductible.

The parish has been providing drop-in services to connect people to housing, employment, training and support through the Community Action Network (CAN) for the past four years. Its site is small, making it difficult to provide services.

Funds from the grant will help CAN get a larger place to help move people into housing.

To donate, send a check to South Hayward Parish, 27287 Patrick Ave., Hayward, CA 94544, with The Joe White Movement in the memo line. Details: 510-432-7703 or southhaywardparish@gmail.com
