Hero brain surgeon and Zero Bob Novak

Today’s HERO: Dr. Alfredo Quinones, brain surgeon at John Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, who two decades ago was a migrant worker in California, picking vegetables for $22 a day.

After climbing a fence from Mexico at age 19 to find a better life, he fought stereotypes, went to school, learned math and science (because it was easier than English, he says) and became one of the best brain surgeons in the world. MSNBC.com did a nice story on him today.

Regardless of where one stands on immigration, it’s nice to hear a story like this, instead of all the anti-immigrant scare stories that keep spurting out of people’s mouths. The dream still works for some people coming to America. Oh, and he did become a citizen. Apparently we still need some illegal immigrants.

ZERO: (BIG POST-POST NOTE: When I wrote the following blog post, no one had any idea that Bob Novak had a brain tumor which may have contributed to the accident. I’m a jerk, but c’mon …)

Conservative political commentator Robert Novak, who excels at scolding people for doing what he thinks is the wrong thing, apparently hit someone in his car on Wednesday and kept driving.

Novak, 77, mowed down a 66-year-old man in Washington and was stopped a block away by a bicyclist who got in front of Novak’s black Corvette and called 911. Novak said he had no idea he hit the man, who was treated for minor injuries.

The bicyclist, David Bono, said Novak kept trying to take off while he was telling him he ran someone over. Bono said, despite Novak saying he didn’t know he hit someone, he saw the victim go up over his hood and get “sort of splayed into the windshield.”

Yeah, that’s what sucks about hitting full-grown human beings. You can hardly tell when their body smashes up against your windshield.

Novak skated, receiving a $50 citation for failing to yield the right of way.

Novak apparently has a reputation for being an aggressive driver. He cursed a pedestrian in 2001 for allegedly jaywalking, allegedly saying the only other option in dealing with jaywalkers, besides yelling at them, is to “run ‘em over, but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that.”

Uh … guess that’s not the case.

Incredible and so inspiring! And being Mexican myself and familiar with the challenges that one can face and rise to the occasion for, this story touched my heart. Thanks for sharing Tony.
