Heroes and Zeros: Brave kids, bad dogs and bullies in Sacramento

Today’s HERO: An 11-year-old boy in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was playing in his uncle’s backyard when a pit bull attacked him. So instead of run or submit, Gabriel Almeida boned up … and grabbed the dog by the neck and bit him so hard one of the dog’s teeth popped out.

Nearby workers chased the dog off before Gabriel could really hurt him. Gabriel did require four stitches after the incident. Brazilian kids are tough — it must be all that Gracie Jiujitsu.

ZERO: Our own Governator, who decided to deal with the state budget deadlock in Sacramento by saying if the legislature didn’t reach an accord soon, he would cut all (about 200,000)¬†state employee’s salaries’ to minimum wage.

Flexing your muscles and throwing out some threatening, semi-stupid dialogue may work in action movies, but in the real world, it usually backfires. Especially when those affected have little or nothing to do with the problem to begin with.

I bet the lawyers representing the state in all the ensuing lawsuits wouldn’t take minimum wage.
