It sounds silly that we would even be discussing the legitimacy of heavy metal in 2009. Nevertheless, another big step in the right direction was taken with Metallica’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday.
They showed class and they showed they deserved to be there. I couldn’t help but wonder, when they played a blistering version of “Master of Puppets,” how many people in that room were getting Metallica – the real Metallica – for the first time. And liking it.
The class part came in not only flying so many old friends and comrades to the show, and Cliff Burton’s father accepting for him, but having former bassist Jason Newsted play their mini set (they also played “Enter Sandman”) right alongside current bassist Robert Trujillo. Seeing Newsted up there brought back a lot of memories for a lot of people. And they sounded pretty good for going Spinal Tap with two bassists. Maybe they should invite Jason back for good …
