Adam Lambert went nuts at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, kissing men, thrusting his crotch into dancers’ faces, and generally acting like a berserk Viking on shore leave.
It may not have been appropriate to mainstream America and, if I was home watching with my kids instead of screaming obscenities and throwing the devil horns salute at a KISS concert that night, I would’ve turned the channel (I did manage to watch it on YouTube today before Dick Clark Productions pulled it off).
Maybe because I didn’t want to explain his behavior to my kids. But mostly because it’s all so stupid.
Lambert was obviously trying to make a point – and when it looks that obvious, one shouldn’t bother. He lamented the supposed hypocrisy of people accepting women acting like this on stage instead of gay men. Boo-hoo.
There’s more to it than that. Though yes, he’s right that we accept this sort of thing from women more easily, the truth is that when Madonna does something like this on stage, you get the feeling she means it.
And, in a weird way, she’s earned the right to do it. Adam Lambert hasn’t – which is why he was working so hard to be controversial (that and the fact that, within the gay community, he’s been accused of not being gay enough). I’m not sure what that means.
Lambert’s outrage over the outrage was feigned – he knew exactly what was going to happen. And he was counting on it. That song sounded like a bad Britney Spears outtake, and he milked it like Meat Loaf, only without the quality vocals. He usually can sing – unless he’s distracted by trying to molest everyone on stage to make a point.
