Hicks: A point about Katy and Elmo

At this time I’d like to point out the double standard at work here, as Elmo wears no pants.
The clip was slated to run during “Sesame Street’s” upcoming season but has now been pulled due to protests from parents who found Perry’s outfit to be too provocative.
Actually, I thought it was pretty tame, compared to some of the outfits she wears, which occasionally make me panic as my first response is something along the lines of “My God, They’re gonna BLOW.”
Anyways, you’d think this wouldn’t be a problem. Women have cleavages. Kids know mommy has boobies. In fact, lots of mommies have boobies (and, just for the record, I support those women). So what? She wasn’t looking particularly sexy. I saw the little song she did with Elmo, and it was cute. Perry interacted with the characters and had more fun than the average guest. Big damned deal.
Again – for the millionth time, it seems – can’t we start worrying about things that REALLY MATTER?
At no time, as a parent, was I worried that watching this skit would prompt my 2-year-old to march out and start robbing liquor stores in order to start saving money for breast implants.
In the video, Perry performs a riff on her hit single “Hot N Cold” alongside Elmo, while wearing a green dress with a sheer panel that reveals her cleavage. Elmo is shown running around the hem of Perry’s dress while she sings, “How am I supposed to play with you?/You’re up and you’re down/You’re running around.”
It’s still on YouTube. Go watch it – it’s sort of fun. Now I wish, since it was banned anyway, she would’ve wore something really slutty. Because I’m a man – I like that sort of thing.

I’ve seen racier costumes in figure skating competitions. Sheesh. I think she’s adorable, myself, a Barbie among muppets.

I was more disturbed by how much she looks like Zooey Deshcanel. And, as has been pointed out on The Poop, Miss Piggy dresses way sluttier: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/parenting/detail?entry_id=73031

This is a great Blog Tone. Love your work. can’t wait for the Holiday/family pieces. I have a feeling that you will struggle with putting up Christmas lights this season. Can’t wait to read. Tell your neighbors I say ” suk it!”
