No joke – I know Rebecca Black. I even sat down with her last night and chatted for about an hour.
Only this poor person isn’t that Rebecca Black. She’s in a class of mine. I knew her name was Rebecca, but when we swapped papers as part of a peer-editing session (by the way, nothing like having some guy who was in kindergarten when you started working at a newspaper rip apart your stupid literary analysis) I saw her last name.
“No,” I said, looking at her. “Your last name isn’t …”
“Yep, it is,” she said, shaking her head sadly.
This poor person gets harassed all the time for sharing a name with the 13-year-old YouTube sensation who sings probably the worst song in the worst video ever made, yet who I actually defended in a column last week.
She gets countless Facebook friend requests every day and has people asking her all the time to sing that stupid song. This Rebecca Black is quiet and unassuming, probably the last person who would sing something on Facebook.
Hopefully for her sake – and everyone else’s – this will pass. Soon.
