Back on her V-Day mission

Marina Gatto (below, center), San Mateo County’s young activist for the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, will return to the county’s steps on Valentine’s Day to rally for marriage equality.

Gatto, who is from San Carlos and now a student at UC Berkeley, rose to national prominence as a gay-rights and same-sex marriage advocate after her mothers, Ramona Gatto (below, right) and Arzu Akkus-Gatto, were denied a marriage license from San Mateo County four years ago.

Assembly campaign finances already surfacing

The primary is 16 months away (or perhaps 12, if state Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello, has his way), but campaign finance filings for Assembly candidates Jerry Hill (left) and Richard Holober are already bubbling.

With a Jan. 31 filing deadline passed, documents reveal, well, not a whole lot, save for different fundraising philosophies.

Glaring omission?

Bay MeadowsThe Friends of Bay Meadows, who are still trying to save their beloved San Mateo race track from almost certain redevelopment, now believe their icon got the short end of the county’s historical stick on purpose.

Linda Schinkel, the coordinator for Friends of Bay Meadows, asked the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors Tuesday whether the lack of a mention of Bay Meadows Race Track in the county’s history documentary, “Made in America: San Mateo County’s History from Dairies to DNA,” was, perhaps, intentional. The one-hour film premiered in December.

Back in the blogosphere

After a hiatus of admittedly far too long, the Insider, which writes musings on the juicier side of San Mateo County politics, has returned to the blogosphere!

Re-read and comment on the tidbits you see in the Insider’s column, which appears every Saturday in the print edition of the San Mateo County Times. And better yet, log on throughout the week for exclusive juicy items that won’t appear in the paper.

More county juice, more often. Mmmmmm…
