John Edwards stop for photo op

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards, who made a campaign stop in Berkeley on Sunday, also grabbed a local endorsement from state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco.

And what would be an endorsement without a photo op? Voila!

John Edwards and Leland Yee

Though his stop was part of a college tour to get more young people engaged in his campaign, Edwards intentionally held the event at the Berkeley YWCA, off of UC Berkeley’s campus. He spoke to the crowd of more than 1,000 at that location “to express his solidarity with the workers at the University of California at Berkeley who have been struggling for fair wages,” a statement from his campaign said.

Yee said he picked Edwards because “the hallmarks of his Presidency will be bridging the economic divide between the rich and poor and finally providing the leadership this country desperately needs to bring our troops safely home from Iraq.”

Though we digress, we think it worth mentioning that Edwards was the target of an anti-gay slur Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference by conservative pundit Ann Coulter. Unable to dodge reporters’ questions about it after Sunday’s rally, Edwards called it “hateful, selfish and childish behavior.” He is asking supporters on his Web site to help him raise $100,000 in “Coulter Cash” to “fight back against the politics of bigotry.”
