Someone knocked down the sign amid the crosses in Lafayette sometime Monday night or early Tuesday.
The incident happened after anti-Iraq war protesters held a vigil at the hillside Monday night to remember the war dead. Supporters of the Iraq mission, who oppose the display of crosses, showed up in a counter protest that grew loud and heated at times. Police officers kept an eye on the crowd of roughly 350.
On Tuesday, cross organizers propped up the sign, which states the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, and will restore it later this week, they said.
This is the third time in five months the sign has been vandalized.
