The wait for Whole Foods continues

An update in the opening of a Whole Foods in Lafayette has long been coming, but the most recent announcement is not what shoppers planned on hearing. The Whole Foods store will not open in Lafayette until early 2010.

As a result of the current state of the economy, Whole Foods has slowed down the opening of new stores, which pushed back the planned opening date for a store in Lafayette.

The store is still planned to be located in the vacancy left by Albertson’s in the same shopping center as Safeway. The current parking lot is not large enough to meet the demands for potential customers to the Whole Foods store. Whole Foods is in the process of finding options to meet the need for more parking.

The question now is whether Whole Foods will receive the same stream of customers that often flock to new store openings that it would have received had it opened shortly after the initial announcement of its opening.

Sam Richards, editor of the Lamorinda Sun here …. I’ve had a few people ask me why Lafayette needs a Whole Foods store when there is one only a few miles away in downtown Walnut Creek.

That’s a fair question; after all, the existing one isn’t that far away, and many Lamorindans go to downtown WC regularly.

However, I’ve had many more calls than that, over the past six months, asking me what we know about Whole Foods, and when the Lafayette store will open. Most of those callers told me they want it closer to home, not only for convenience’s sake but because they want to shop local.

While Lafayette has no shortage of grocery options, my very unscientific poll shows Whole Foods has local support, and that is good for everyone in Lamorinda.
