Orinda school parcel tax increase passes

Over 70 percent of the voters voted in favor of the parcel tax increase for the Orinda Union School District, which is more than the two-thirds majority needed for the measure to pass.

The parcel tax, which will increase $124 per year from $385 to $509, will never expire.

The passing of this measure will likely save many school programs that would have been cut if the district had faced the $1 million budget deficit expected without the parcel tax increase. The passing of the measure will also save the jobs of many employees who would have been let go as a result of the budget deficit.

Seniors who earn less than 50 percent of the county’s median income are exempt from the parcel tax.
