The Acalanes Union High School District Board has decided that the equivalent of 40.6 teachers, librarians and counselors will receive preliminary layoff notices, less than half of the previous number of layoffs expected. The original number of layoff notices to be handed out was the equivalent of 92.4.
The reason for the change is that the budget approved by state legislators cut less from the district than the original budget put forward by the governor did.
With the large amount of donations gathered by parents clubs and different foundations supporting the schools in the area, that number is expected to drop even further. Donations from these sources totaled $1 million last year and are expected to reach a similar amount this year.
