Caroline Bell of Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School in Moraga won the 33rd annual Contra Costa Times Spelling Bee Saturday at the Tice Valley Community Gym in Walnut Creek. She will now represent the area at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.

At the Contra Costa Times Spelling Bee, Bell beat out 108 other students who had won their school spelling bees.

Bell won by correctly spelling the words “idiopathy” and “amaxophobia” after the runner-up, Allison Koontz of William Bristow Middle School in Brentwood, misspelled “idiopathy” on her turn.

For winning the Contra Costa Times Spelling Bee, Bell also received a $100 savings bond, a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Online and a dictionary.
