New restaurant opens in Lafayette

A new restaurant, Artisan Bistro, opened in Lafayette on March 10 in the location formerly occupied by Gigi’s, 1005 Brown Ave.

Although the restaurant leans toward a more modern feel, the owner of Artisan Bistro, John Marquez, has made it a point to honor the location’s history as well. Marquez started out by freshening up the building that has stood in Lafayette since 1922, by painting the walls and cleaning up the patio. The menu also features funnel cake, the most popular desert at Gigi’s.

For more information about Artisan Bistro, check out their website, which includes the menu and an option to make reservations:

Saint Mary’s on the outside looking in

The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team has made some giant steps in the past few years, climbing from a “sure-win” for other teams to a team in the national rankings.

The next step, returning to the NCAA Tournament, was stopped by the NCAA Tournament selection committee when they left the Gaels out of the 65-team bracket.

Despite winning 26 games and finishing second in the West Coast Conference, the Gaels were left out in favor of sixth and seventh place teams from major conferences.

Saint Mary’s will get to play in the NIT, which will give them a chance to prove that the selection committee made the wrong decision.

Matadors suffer heartbreaking loss again

After having one of the best DFAL basketball seasons in recent memory, the Miramonte boys suffered a devastating loss in overtime in the NCS Division III final Friday night. Things didn’t get any better for the Matadors in their NorCal Division III quarterfinal game against Enterprise-Redding.

Despite trailing for almost the entire game, Miramonte took a 51-50 lead with just 18 seconds left thanks to a basket by star player Eric Obeysekere.

A ticket to the NorCal semifinals was stolen from Miramonte’s hands as Enterprise-Redding’s top player, Anthony Williams, drove to the basket and scored a lay-up with only 2.5 seconds remaining.

A last-second effort by the Matadors came up short, and their season came to a disappointing end.

Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team makes WCC championship

The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team earned the right to play in the West Coast Conference Tournament championship game by beating the University of Portland, 71-61, in a semifinal Sunday night.

Even bigger than the victory may have been the return of star player Patty Mills, who has been out since January 29 when he injured his right hand.

The Gaels will need him more than ever tonight as they square off against rival and WCC powerhouse Gonzaga in the WCC Tournament championship game.

Saint Mary’s last reached the championship game in 2005, losing to Gonzaga, and haven’t won the WCC tournament since 1997. Gonzaga has appeared in the championship game 12 years in a row, winning eight of the last 10 titles.

The game tips off at 6:00 p.m. at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
