Haithem Ibrahim, 20, of Lafayette, is being charged with felony hazing causing death after another student pledging Ibrahim’s fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, died from alcohol poisoning in December. Ibrahim will face up to three years in prison if convicted.

The deceased pledge, Carson Starkey, 18, of Austin, Texas, was found with a blood-alcohol level between 0.39 percent and 0.44 percent. Starkey had participated in the fraternity’s “Brown Bag Night” where he was forced to consume alcohol his “Big Brother,” Ibrahim, had placed in a brown bag.

Because Ibrahim was not 21 yet, another fraternity brother, Zacary Ellis, 22, of San Luis Obispo, bought the alcohol and is also being charged with felony hazing causing death.

Two other fraternity brothers, Russell Taylor, 22, of Fresno, and Adam Marszal, 21, of Carmichael, are being charged with misdemeanor hazing for taking part in the event.
