Lamorinda United U18 Girls ranked second in state

The Lamorinda United Under-18 girls soccer team is currently ranked second in the state in their age group after several strong performances at tournaments.

The girls finished second in the Davis College Showcase and won their bracket at the Pleasanton Rage College Showcase.

The team’s most impressive result was winning the Under-19 Division of the Mustang Stampede Tournament. In the team’s toughest game of the tournament, the girls fell behind, 2-0, to the Mustang Spirit, before scoring three unanswered goals to steal the win.

The team includes several players from the Under-16 and Under-17 age groups who are playing up against older competition.

Hang up and drive — again

The CHP and other law enforcement agencies will once again be cracking down on drivers using handheld cell phones while driving.

State law, of course, requires drivers to use a hands-free device such as a Bluetooth headset when talking on the phone (something I’ve always found to be just plain easier to begin with). It’s also illegal to text while driving, by the way (one of those “I can’t believe they need to have a law for this” laws).

No word on whether or not the guy I saw shaving while driving along Highway 24 last week was breaking any laws.

So here’s fair warning to get a headset or get off the phone. In earlier crackdowns this month in Orinda alone, police cited 61 drivers for chatting away without a hands-free device.

Rancho Laguna housing project passes another roadblock

The Moraga Planning Commission recently approved the environmental impact report and conceptual development plan for the Rancho Laguna housing project.

The Planning Commission determined that all potential impacts to the environment as a result of the housing project are “less than significant.”

If the developers of the housing project are able to avoid a few final possible hold-ups, then the 27-lot project will be built on 180-acres of land in the Rancho Laguna area of Moraga.

There is resistance to the housing project from many residents of the area that borders where the housing project would be developed.

Local libraries having book sales to raise money

Both the Moraga Library and Orinda Library will be having book sales in early September to raise funds to buy new books, computers and other materials. Funds from the sales also go toward funding different programs that the libraries offer to community members.

Fire burns Lafayette home to the ground

The home at 44 Westwind Road in the Lafayette hills fell victim to a two-alarm fire last night. The fire, which was first reported at 7:35 p.m., burned the home until the structure could no longer hold itself. The home collapsed to the ground around 10:00 p.m.

It took three hours to contain the fire as neighbors watched firefighters attempt to stop the flames from spreading to their homes.

The family that lives at the home was away on vacation, except for their grandmother, who was able to safely escape.

Damages are estimated to be over $3 million. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
