2.7 magnitude earthquake felt in Lamorinda

A 2.7 magnitude earthquake was felt by some residents of Lamorinda who were up in the early hours of Saturday morning. The earthquake happened at 3:40 a.m. and was centered one mile north of Danville.

A quake of this size is unlikely to shake enough to awake anyone from their sleep, which is why many Lamorinda residents were unaware of this earthquake.

There has been no damage reported. No injuries have been reported either.

BART workers ready to strike

Union leaders announced today that BART workers are set to go on strike Monday. The strike is in reaction to BART’s board voting to impose a contract on the second largest union of BART workers, the local 1551 of the Amalgamated Transit Union.

Early indications are that BART workers from the other large unions will not cross the picket line set up by workers from the ATU.

The striking workers will have an impact on BART’s overall service, affecting riders throughout the Bay Area, including many commuters from the Lamorinda area.

Lamorinda commuters heading into San Francisco who are looking to avoid driving their car over the bridge can look into driving to several East Bay locations that offer ferry service across the bay.

Two injured, two lanes closed in motorcycle accident on Highway 24

A motorcycle accident Tuesday afternoon left two people injured and blocked two lanes of eastbound Highway 24 for 30 minutes during commute hours.

Edileerto Arroyo, 46, of Bay Point, lost control of and crashed his motorcycle while weaving through traffic around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Arroyo suffered critical injuries, and police reported that he was not likely to survive. Miriam Artiga, 35, also of Bay Point, was riding on the back of the motorcycle and broke several bones in the crash.

The crash happened just past the Central Lafayette exit, but the lane blockage affected traffic past Berkeley, making the commute much longer for Lamorinda drivers.

Another fire in Lamorinda

The summer heat was only partly responsible for a fire that ignited Monday afternoon in Orinda. The fire that was reported just after 1:00 p.m. was started when sparks from a power tool landed on some dry brush in the area. The fire started behind the Grizzly Peak Stables.

The fire took an hour to contain and burned approximately 1.5 acres of land. Firefighters from the Moraga-Orinda Fire Department, Contra Costa Fire District and East Bay Regional Parks combined to put out the fire.

The fire did not reach any buildings, so damage was contained to the land. There were also no injuries reported.

Temperatures reach triple digits

The forecast for a Monday with temperatures in the mid-80s didn’t ring true today. Temperatures in Lamorinda had hit the mid-80s by early this morning. The high temperature for the Lamorinda area today was 103 degrees this afternoon.

The forecast for the rest of the week has the high temperatures listed in the mid to low-80s, but if today showed anything, it’s that the forecast isn’t always right.

The UV index for the Lamorinda area will be at extremely high levels all week, so if you are going out in the sun, make sure to wear sunscreen to avoid a burn that will make the heat feel that much hotter.

Vehicle fire in Moraga spreads to home

A vehicle caught on fire around 2:00 a.m. Friday morning on Sandringham Drive South in Moraga.

A male resident of a nearby home saw the flames and immediately evacuated his family from their home and called the fire department and police.

The vehicle’s gas tank was leaking, allowing the fire to spread to a nearby yard and home.

Moraga-Orinda firefighters responded to the fire, along with crews from Contra Costa County Fire. They were able to contain all portions of the fire shortly after 2:30 a.m.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire, but there was damage to the nearby yard and home.

Lafayette and Orinda stations affect by BART delays this morning

BART riders at the Lafayette and Orinda stations were forced to wait longer than normal this morning as trains were delayed going in both directions.

The delays were caused when a train hit an unknown object on the tracks between Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill just before 5:00 a.m. The train had to be removed from the tracks to be taken to BART’s maintenance yard.

BART went to a single-track system until the damaged train was removed.

BART riders heading into San Francisco experienced delays of 15 minutes, while riders headed in the Pittsburgh direction experienced delays as long as 20 minutes.

BART is reporting that all trains are currently back on schedule.
