Tuesday’s smoke caused by fire on outskirts of Orinda

If you were outside in the Lamorinda area Tuesday between the hours of 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., you likely smelled smoke caused by a brush fire on the edge of Orinda.

Around 3:00 p.m., a brush fire broke out near the Fish Ranch Road exit off Highway 24 in Orinda. The fire burned its way to the Oakland side of the hills and burned a total of 30 acres.

Nearly 25 fire engines and several helicopters and planes were used to combat the fire. Firefighters were able to have the fire completely contained by 5:15 p.m.

No damage or injuries were a result of the fire. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Lane closures on Hwy. 24 Tuesday

Just got this news release from Caltrans:

Oakland — Caltrans will close the two left lanes on eastbound State Route 24 just before the connector to northbound I-680 tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon to repair a pavement lip that has developed between the lanes and the bridge. The crews will use hot mix asphalt to repair the lane second from the left and then open that lane and continue repairs on the far left lane.

Changeable message signs will be activated in the area to warn motorists. This is the non-peak direction, but motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for travel or use alternate routes if necessary. One such route is eastbound 24 to southbound 680, exit at Main Street and return to northbound 680.

Acalanes superintendent not assuming parcel tax will pass

Polling data presented to the Acalanes school board this summer showed over 90 percent support for extending the district’s $189 parcel tax. But Superintendent John Stockton doesn’t consider it a slam dunk.

“I never assume things are always going to fly on their way through,” he told me today.

But neither is the district mounting a major campaign. Stockton said there’s been some “low-key” outreach regarding the tax, which is on the Nov. 3 ballot. A two-thirds majority voting yes would make the yearly assessment permanent.

Stockton said the district won’t spend a lot of money on the campaign, adding that the current tax doesn’t expire until June 2011.
