A fire broke out in a classroom at Del Rey Elementary School on Wednesday morning. Smoke was seen exiting the classroom shortly after 6:30 a.m., and firefighters were called to the school.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire shortly after arriving a few minutes after the call came in. The fire did not spread beyond the classroom where it started.

Damage to the building is estimated at $18,000, while $2,000 worth of property inside the classroom was destroyed.

Officials at the Moraga-Orinda Fire District reported the cause of the fire as an electrical problem with the heating and cooling unit in the classroom.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
