Campolindo neighborhood looking to slow speeders

The Campolindo neighborhood in Moraga is the most recent neighborhood looking to make an impact against the Lamorinda speeding problem.

The Campolindo Homeowners Association will make a proposal to the Moraga Traffic Safety Advisory Committee at their Jan. 6 meeting to install new traffic signs in the area. The signs that the Campolindo neighborhood is hoping for are the solar-power “Your Speed Is” signs, which have already been put in place in several places in the Lamorinda area.

If the Campolindo neighborhood installs the signs, it won’t be long before other neighborhoods fighting a speeding problem will likely follow the trend.

DFAL girls soccer update

The three Lamorinda schools are consistently contending for DFAL and NCS titles in girls soccer with either Miramonte or Campolindo earning the titles nearly every year. The two schools have combined to win five of the last six girls soccer NCS titles.

All three schools are considered contenders again this year in a competitive DFAL.

Campolindo is sitting in first place with a league record of 3-1. Acalanes is currently in second at 2-1, and Miramonte is in an unfamiliar sixth place with just one win in their first three league games.

Campolindo holds the early season advantage over its Lamorinda rivals, as the Cougars beat the Matadors, 2-1, and the Dons, 1-0, in the week heading into Winter Break.

Holiday library closures

Due to the holiday schedule and budget cuts, the Contra Costa County Libraries have made more closures than they typically make.

All libraries, including the Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda libraries, have been closed since Dec. 23 and will remain closed today and tomorrow. All libraries will again be closed from Thursday, Dec. 31, to Sunday, Jan. 3.

During the closures, the book drop boxes will also be closed, so library patrons are to hold onto all checked-out books until the libraries reopen.

No books will be considered overdue, regardless of due date, until Jan. 4, and no fines will be accumulated.

For more information about the libraries, visit http://www.ccclib.org.

Merry Christmas from the Lamorinda Sun

Merry Christmas to all of our readers from everyone at the Lamorinda Sun! Enjoy a safe holiday with all of your friends and family!

Despite the rain (and even snow!) in Lamorinda in the past month, the weather today is making for a “California Christmas,” as the sun is shining, and temperatures could reach into the sixties.

If you plan on drinking alcohol during your Christmas festivities, remember to pass the keys to a designated driver as Christmas is one of the days that drunk driving-related accidents spike.

Merry Christmas everyone!

An increase in trash rates coming in Orinda

According to the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, they will begin charging new higher rates starting the first of the new year. A rate increase will be specifically targeted toward Orinda residents and businesses.

The suggested and likely rate increase will be 2.4% for residential trash service and 3.6% for commercial trash service.

To view the CCCSWA’s current rates that became effective in March of this year, they are available online here: http://www.wastediversion.org/files/managed/Document/231/Book1.pdf

The CCCSWA’s main website is located here: http://www.wastediversion.org. It provides a lot of good information about recycling, which could potentially help lower your trash rates, if you are able to downsize to a smaller trash container.
