How do you celebrate 25 years as a city? Lots of ways, apparently. Here’s the list of proposed anniversary activities that will be presented to the Orinda City Council tonight:

  • A city-sponsored float in the annual Fourth of July parade
  • A time capsule burial
  • Student writing and poem contest on the topic, “What Does It Mean to be an Orinda Resident?”
  • A “birthday cake in the park” event to coincide with concert in the park on July 29
  • A City Council proclamation
  • A highlight of city facts, events and photos in the Orinda Way newsletter
  • A 1980s themed dance for teenagers
  • A screening of Back to the Future (the highest-grossing film of 1985)
  • A look back at residents who have been named Volunteer of the Year and Citizen of the Year over the past 25 years
  • A gallery of city council portraits from the last 25 years
  • Various 25th anniversary commemorative give-aways like key chains and pens

If Back to the Future were set today, Marty McFly would wind up in 1980.

The city has $5,000 set aside for anniversary events, so any of the above ideas would be paid out of that fund.

And just for kicks, here are some of the events that took a back seat to Orinda’s incorporation in 1985:
