The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team finally did something they haven’t been unable to do in their last ten attempts: beat Gonazaga in the West Coast Conference Tournament. The Gaels beat the Bulldogs, 81-62, on Monday night in the WCC Tournament Final, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament (also known as “March Madness”).
This was the first WCC Tournament championship for the Gaels since 1997 and only the second since the tournament started in 1987. It is the sixth time the team has earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament. In their last appearance, in 2008, the Gaels were knocked out in the first round by Miami.
