With the school year right around the corner, the local high schools all have their high school registration dates coming up, where students get registered for school activities and parents open their checkbook.
Acalanes High School’s Dons’ Days are Aug. 18 and 19. Campolindo High School’s Cougar Day is Aug. 19. Miramonte High School’s Mats’ Days are Aug. 19 and a special late registration date on Aug. 25 at 7:30 a.m.
Several forms are available online through the Acalanes Union High School District’s website that can help expedite parts of the registration process. There is also a checklist available for download to help keep things organized.
Acalanes High School recently won $1,000 in an eScrip contest by the website DriversEd.com.
The $1,000 prize was awarded to Acalanes because they were responsible for the highest number of completed online driving courses during the three-month period the contest ran.
While the prize is a welcome contribution to the school, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as Acalanes receives major contributions each year through the eScrip program.
During 2009, Acalanes received $36,613.71 as a result of the program. There are currently more than 1,100 families signed up for the eScrip program to benefit Acalanes.
The Pet Food Express Store in Lafayette will be taking part in an event called Dunkin’ Doggies Dog Wash on Aug. 28. The event is being sponsored by the Contra Costa Humane Society.
All proceeds from dog wash tokens that are purchased that day will go toward a Humane Society program called AniMeals. AniMeals provides pet food and supplies to families who otherwise can’t afford those items.
Tokens are $15 each or $45 for four. The tokens can be used that day to have dogs washed, or they can be used at a later date.

The play Macbeth will run at the California Shakespeare Theater (better known as Cal Shakes) in Orinda from Aug. 18 through Sept. 12.
Macbeth will be directed by Joel Sass, who received much acclaim for his direction of the play Pericles in 2008. The cast for Macbeth will consist of eight actors, including many regulars of Cal Shakes.
Ticket prices range from $20-65 depending on night and seat location. There is also a $5 discount for seniors (65+) and youth (16 and under). Tickets can be purchased on the Cal Shakes website.
The town’s planning department confirmed the application was filed July 27 for the old Blockbuster site and the two vacant spaces immediately to its right and left. The address would be 542 Center Street.
The store is a permitted use at the site, according to planning assistant Kelly Clancy, but at the request of one of the planning commissioners, a special meeting will be held Aug. 23 to discuss the application. She did not know which commissioner requested the meeting.
I had first heard a Dollar Tree might be coming to the Rheem while writing this article, from July 16 about other new business at the center. But at that point the town did not have an application on file, and that’s the official say, from the town’s perspective, on whether or not someone wants to open up shop in Moraga. At the time, Planning Director Lori Salamack said she had not spoken with anyone from a dollar store about the Rheem center. Rheem property manager John Welter also said there had been no discussions about a Dollar Tree.
So I must amend my election post from last week after one candidate and our intrepid political reporter told me I was a bit off on filing deadlines. The deadline is extended through Wednesday for races in which at least one incumbent decides not to file, not just those in which no incumbents file.
So that means non-incumbents still have until Wednesday to file for the following races: Acalanes Union High School District Governing Board, Moraga School District Governing Board, Lafayette School District Governing Board, Orinda Union School District Governing Board.
Tyler Browne stole the show at the Moraga Open Tennis Championships. Browne won the men’s singles title by beating Ben Weston in the final, 6-1, 6-4. Browne also came within a set of being part of the winning men’s doubles team, but the team of Browne and Chizever fell in the final to the team of Nima Roshan and Gary Sacks, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
Yasmin Schnack made a name at the Moraga Open as well by being part of the winning women’s doubles team and mixed doubles team. Schnack’s winning teammates were Katsiaryna Zheltova and Eric Roberson.
Ivana lisjak was named the women’s singles champion after beating Zoe De Bruycker in the final, 6-2, 6-0.
