Drilling of fourth bore starts tomorrow

Construction crews will officially begin the drilling process of the Caldecott Tunnel’s fourth bore in Orinda Monday morning. The first drill will happen during a commencement event to celebrate the occasion.

The fourth bore will be drilled using a boring machine called a “Road Header.” The machine is over 50 feet long and weighs 130 tons. Needless to say, you’ll likely notice it on your way into the tunnel.

While the drilling is starting on the Orinda side, it will eventually start on the other side of the hill as well. Because of the softness of the rock that crews will be drilling into, they will only be able to drill 10 feet per day, as they will have to stop every three feet to reset support.

So close to being the final election update

Orinda Union School District is the holdout. Since no OUSD board incumbents have filed, challengers have until Wednesday to file. And the other school boards and fire board are reported by the county, which had not updated its list as of 5:20 Friday afternoon, so technically someone could have filed last-minute for those races.

But, with those caveats, here are your candidates, Lamorinda:

Lafayette City Council (two seats)
Brandt Andersson*, Don Tatzin*, Traci Reilly, Dino Riggio

Moraga Town Council (two seats)
Dave Trotter*, Ken Chew*, Dennis Wanken, Eleni Wanken, Seth Freeman

Orinda City Council (three seats)
Tom McCormick*, Amy Worth*, Sue Severson*, Dean Orr, Scott Zeller

Acalanes Union High School District board (three seats)
Tom Mulvaney*, Richard Whitmore*, Susie Epstein

Lafayette School District board (three seats)
Art Kapoor*, Theresa Gerringer*, David Gerson

Moraga School District board (three seats)
Charles MacNulty*, Kym Leserman, Kathy Ranstrom, Shari Simon

Orinda Union School District board (three seats)
Juliane Rossiter, Christopher Severson, Tyson Krumholz, Bekki Van Voorhis-Gilbert

Moraga-Orinda Fire District board (three seats)
Division 1: Frank Sperlng*
Division 3: Dick Olsen*
Division 4: John Wyro*, Bob Jungbluth

Six new firefighters for MOFD

Six new firefighters joined the Moraga-Orinda Fire District on July 29 after taking the Oath of Allegiance at a graduation ceremony at Saint Mary’s College. The six new MOFD firefighters are Jason Ward, Matthew Lopez, Bill Reed, Jeremiah Dees, Andrew Hess and David Iman.

The six men were welcomed to the district after successfully completing an eight-week training academy conducted by the MOFD. The men were selected for the MOFD training course based on strong employment backgrounds filled with experience as firefighters and paramedics. The hiring of these men is another step toward ensuring that all MOFD firefighters are also trained paramedics.

Moraga Town Council: Dennis and Eleni Wanken are in

It took until the day before the filing period ends, but we finally have challengers in the Moraga Town Council race. Husband and wife Dennis and Eleni Wanken have filed papers and will try to unseat incumbents Dave Trotter and Ken Chew.

“With the challenges local governments are facing in these difficult times, (Dennis and Eleni) are running to help preserve the quality of life that brought them to Moraga decades ago,” said “Team Wanken” in a statement that just came to my inbox.

The statement highlights their prior electoral experience, Eleni with the Acalanes school board and Dennis with the Moraga school board.

Wanken ran unsuccessfully for Town Council in 2008.
