Following an accident on Highway 24 that left one car crushed and its driver trapped inside, several drivers stopped to put out flames from the car’s fire that helped save the trapped woman’s life, according to Moraga-Orinda Fire District officials.

The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when the car veered off of the freeway and crashed head-on into a tree.  The woman suffered major injuries in the crash and was trapped inside of her car when the engine caught fire.

Several drivers stopped to put out the fire using fire extinguishers and by throwing wet dirt on the flames.

Fire crews were able to free the driver using hydraulic equipment, and she was rushed to John Muir Medical Center. The status of the driver is currently unknown.
