The Commonwealth Club will be hosting the 2010 MacArthur Genius Grant winners in Lafayette on Thursday.

The MacArthur Fellows Program gives genius grants to exceptional inventors, innovators and creative talents. The winners receive $500,000 — no strings attached — over the next five years to pursue work in their field of interest.

This year’s winners:

  • Carlos Bustamante, Ph.D., a genetics professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
  • Dawn Song, Ph.D., an electrical engineering and computer science associate professor at UC Berkeley
  • Emmanuel Saez, Ph.D.,  an E. Morris Cox Professor of Economics at UC Berkeley.

The Commonwealth Club also lists Lafayette City Manager Steve Falk among the geniuses, but then it says he’s the moderator. So the jury’s still out on Steve Falk.

The event will begin with a networking reception at 5:45 p.m. and the program at 6:30 p.m. at the Lafayette library, 3491 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, Lafayette.

Admission is $12 for Commonwealth Club members, $22 for nonmembers and $7 for students with a valid ID. Sign up at here.
