A little love for local law enforcement, firefighters

Victor Ivry e-mailed us today to say that Table 24 restaurant in the Theatre Square in Orinda (of which Ivry is co-owner) will show the love to local police and fire departments on Sunday (Sept. 11, of course). Any member of the Orinda, Lafayette or Moraga police or fire departments will be treated to a meal this Sunday to thank them for their service to the community and to honor the memory of those who gave up their lives in the line of duty at the World Trade Centers in New York 10 years ago.
“There are moments in life that have to be remembered and honored,” Ivry said. “When you own a restaurant and have the pleasure of feeding people, you show your appreciation and gratitude through your food.”
Added co-owner Michael Karp, “We hope to see a lot of uniforms in the restaurant on Sunday so we can express our thanks in person.”
The restaurant will be open 9 am – 9 pm Sunday for both brunch and dinner. For working officers and firefighters take out is also available by calling 254-0124.

St. Mary’s fall sports update

The St. Mary’s women’s soccer team is off to one of their best starts ever, as the team has a record of 4-1-1 through their first six games. The team’s only loss came in a game at Texas Tech. The Gaels play Friday against VCU at 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against Utah. Both games are at home as part of the St. Mary’s Tournament.

The men’s soccer team has had some early success as well, earning a 1-0 win over UC Davis and a tie against San Jose State. The team is currently on a trip to Southern California where they will play UCLA Friday and UC Riverside Sunday.

The women’s volleyball team is 3-3 so far this year; however, they have been playing great recently, as the team beat 18th ranked Duke, 3-2, and Notre Dame, 3-0, at the Stanford Invitational last weekend.

Local library book sales

Some of the most underrated events in the Lamorinda area are the book sales the local libraries put on.

The Moraga Library regularly holds a book sale in front of the library where local readers come by to get great deals on books. Their next sale is on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The highlight of the event is the bag sale, which takes place for the final 30 minutes of each sale. Customers can purchase a paper bag for $3 and can get as many books as they can fit in the bag for that price.

The Orinda Library has a Book Shop that is open Mondays through Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a later closing time of 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays. They also will have special sales similar to the Moraga Library. Check their website for an updated sales schedule.

Lamorinda high school football off to a perfect start

The three Lamorinda high school football teams all started off the 2011 season with wins this weekend.

Acalanes provided the most impressive scoreline of the weekend, as the Dons dominated Ygnacio Valley, 49-0, in a game tonight at Diablo Valley College.

Miramonte escaped from their dramatic game at Analy High School in Sebastopol with a 36-35 win.

While the winner of the Campolindo vs. Moreau Catholic game was never in much doubt, whether or not the game would be finished was, as a power outage left the stadium dark. The lights came back on shortly before the referees decided to postpone the end of the game, and the Cougars finished the game up with a 37-14 victory.
