Both Saint Mary’s and Dominican are beautiful campuses, and they’ve proven able to host these type of events before for California races.

My bet, though, is that the other colleges just offered better facilities to fit the needs, especially since with a sitting president the Secret Service plays a substantial role in determining whether they can secure the site.
