A magnitude 4.0 earthquake had many people throughout Lamorinda and the greater area awake this morning at 5:33 a.m. when it struck.

The earthquake was centered one mile north of El Cerrito, directly beneath the Mira Vista Country Club and along the Hawyard Fault. It was registered at a depth of 5 miles.

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake hit the area just 8 seconds prior to the magnitude 4.0 earthquake, which resulted in an initial jolt feeling followed by the rolling 4.0 earthquake.

Aftershocks of 2.0 and 1.2 magnitudes followed at 6:03 a.m. and 6:29 a.m. respectively.

BART trains were delayed five to 10 minutes, while tracks were inspected for safety precautions.

No major injuries or damage have been reported.
