Silvani worked with Concord nonprofit, Shelter, Inc., to build a play structure at their facility. Williams worked with the Walnut Creek Parks and Recreation Summer Camps to develop a music program for special-needs children. Pines focused on fighting illiteracy in the Dominican Republic by recording Spanish speakers reading books. She turned these recordings into books on CD, which she gave to an orphanage.

Lafayette’s Hans Florine breaks record…again

Hans Florine, of Lafayette, is one of the world’s most well-known climbers. He took another step into the limelight Sunday, as he climbed the vertical face of The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 46 seconds.

Florine’s climb broke the previous record of 2 hours, 36 minutes and 45 seconds set in 2010. Florine had held the record, which he set in 2008, until that 2010 climb by Sean Leary and Dean Potter.

Perhaps most impressive about Florine’s feat is that he turned 48 years old this week, yet he is climbing faster than he ever has before and faster than anyone else for that matter.
