Campolindo named California Division 3 Sports School of the Year

Campolindo was recently named the California Division 3 Sports School of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports. The Cougars also won the award last year, making them repeat winners.

The Cougars athletic excellence from last year carried over with an improbable run by the football team that saw them crowned as NCS champions before narrowly falling in the CIF Division III State Bowl Game.

The Campolindo cross country teams each finished fourth in the state meet with Carrie Verdon winning the state’s individual honors.

Boys swimming, boys volleyball and baseball all won NCS titles during the spring season as well, with the boys swimming and baseball teams being ranked near the top in the state all season long.

Branaghs killed in plane crash

Lafayette residents, Peter and Mona Branagh, were killed in a plane crash Saturday in Utah.

The couple took off Saturday in a small, private plane from Danville headed for Aspen, Colo., but when the plane never arrived, a helicopter was sent out to locate it. On Sunday, the helicopter located the wreckage of the plane in a canyon in Sevier County, Utah.

California Bank of Commerce, where Peter worked as the Director, confirmed the couple had been killed in the crash.

The Branaghs were most notably known in the community for developments and improvements done through Peter’s development firm, including the Hidden Oaks housing development in Lafayette.

Graduation and dropout rates for 2011′s high school graduating class were recently released by the state, broken down by district and school.

The Acalanes Union High School District managed to improve their already high graduation rate from 95.4% in 2010 to 96.3% in 2011. The AUHSD dropout rate decreased from 3.3% in 2010 to 1.8% in 2011.

Campolindo had the highest graduation rate in the district at 99.39% for 2011, while Miramonte (97.92%) and Acalanes (97.21%) also had impressively high graduation rates, which has become expected of the district’s schools.

The dropout rate was equally impressive, as there were only two recorded dropouts total between the three schools with Campolindo and Acalanes having one each and Miramonte having  none for the class of 2011.

New fences in Lafayette

As part of Lafayette’s downtown sidewalk improvement project, several new fence sections went up in front of Trader Joe’s on Mt. Diablo Boulevard recently.

A metal artist constructed the fence sections out of steel to mimic the rock patterns on other constructions in the surrounding area. The completed sections were inserted in between trees along that strip of sidewalk, in order to preserve the longstanding trees.

Only a few final updates remain in the city’s $2 million sidewalk improvement project before the construction will be finished.

For those who have seen the updates, what do you think?
